Looking for books that give a strong voice to its time: slang, discussion of then-current events, the atmosphere of the times, etc. Best to get a feel of the times from people who are living through them, you know?

Little Man, What Now? by Hans Fallada which is set in germany just before hitler took over

The Adventures of Jonathan Corncob, Loyal American Refugee By himself which is set during the American revolution. The whole thing reads like a political cartoon that hates both sides of the war.
