Are there any music composition book that focuses more on doing small compositional exercises than reading theory?

You need both, man. You need to understand how it works as well as plenty of practice. What's the good of harmonising Bach chorales if you don't know any of the rules for doing so?

I'm not comfortable with your elitist anti-punk sentiment here, friend.

yes

theory isn't that complicated, you learn that in weeks. it takes YEARS of practice to actually get good.

you're on /lit/ so you probably aren't that stupid anyway, so just read the theory and then get on the grind.

I don't know, man... maybe that you learn to harmonize? I'm not against theory, theory is a useful shortcut, but that's just stupid.

Take a look at "Counterpoint in the Style of J.S. Bach". I think it fits the description.
