18975144 No.18975144 [Reply] [Original]

>"Adolescence is not only an important period in life, but that it is the only period where one may speak of life in the full sense of the word. The attractile drives are unleashed around the age of thirteen, after which they gradually diminish, or rather they are resolved in models of behaviour which are, after all, only constrained forces. The violence of the initial explosion means that the outcome of the conflict may remain uncertain for years; this is what is called a transitory regime in electrodynamics. But little by little the oscillations become slower, to the point of resolving themselves in mild and melancholic long waves; from this moment on all is decided, and life is nothing more than a preparation for death. This can be expressed in a more brutal and less exact way by saying that man is a diminished adolescent.”

Uhhh...how are you supposed to refute this?

Not an outright refutation, but at 28 I am just starting to resonate with meaning. In my younger years I could tell you a rote response or a reason based response about almost any topic you could throw my way. But I was utterly tone deaf to the significance of events and opportunities (especially missed opportunities!) in my life. The constraints of modern society kept my experiences on rails other than my years of being a schizo and multiple commitals. I know that seems oxymoronic, but schizo episodes are not worth much in the meaning department other than to provide a backdrop against which reasoned and intentioned irrational behavior can stand out more distinctively.

It feels like I am waking from sleepwalking through life and discovering a depth of feeling in both new and old revisited experiences alike. I do feel that our modern experience with aging is radically different than the era he is describing. The forces that constrain behavior are so much stronger and deviation is far rarer because of social media both being an omnipresent voyuer and the eyes of the law. Not to mention providing a display of acceptable behavior to be mimicked unthinkingly without the inborn connection to feeling.

Just today I was struck by the idea that misbehavior and transgression is a fertile soil for community building. The saying "thick as thieves" takes on such a rich depth when you truly understand the potential for comradery born from shared guilt. There is so much potential beyond the border of modern society that many have written off unthinkingly without worrying about the cost or consequences.

Adolescence isn't a real period of life at all. It's a limbo aberration between the two periods and much built-up market fetishised by adolescents, children, and adults.

Adolescence is literally a made up life stage so companies could market products to new demographics.

>> No.18981139

>>18975144
it's a compelling statement but doesn't bear closer inspection.

The idea that the deepest groves of our personality being laid down in adolescence may even be true, though I suspect deeper and more fundamental lines are laid before the age of four. Adolescence is the integration of a sexual creature atop the asexual child which is a psychically violent process. The mind that is warped has however been in development for a long time already.

The quote also discounts changes post-adolescence which come about by examination and maturing. The maturing process is a change in matter of degrees, much less violent than occurred in adolescence, hoola-man is right in this. But where puberty shakes the foundations, maturation is like a fine brush. To discount it is to discount a finer resolution of life.

I'm also not totally convinced that dramatic changes in personality can not occur in adulthood. Taking mushrooms, experiencing certain religious experiences, bearing a child or experiencing extreme trauma are all things which can have profound impacts on the psyche.
