Should I read something else before starting with this?

You can skip plato completely. Just read Heraclitus and read a nietzsche bio and start from there.

Homer and at least some grasp of the presocratics: Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Pitagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides.

Those are just so you can understand the birth of philosophy and from which point it all started as well as the main problems which Plato confronts.

No, but make sure that when you start the complete works you start with the Republic. It’ll ease you in and it’s just overall a great read even for non-philosophical types. Trust me, start with the Republic.

I'll tell you what I'm doing. To start, I would go with >>18966801 and Hesiod to get a good foundation on Greek culture through some of their most influential stories. I also read the Histories by Herodotus, it shows how Athens became the center of Greek society and includes some info about some pre-Socratic philosophers like Thales and Pythagoras as well. Also, I agree with >>18969408 ,
reading this right now, highly recommend. I'm upset it didn't have all of Heraclitus' fragments but other than that I've enjoyed it so far. (Also don't start with The Republic, from what I've seen in another thread on here the complete works is ordered in the way suggested by the people who compiled them. Apparently they talk about it in the intro) After I finish the Pre-Socratics I'm going to read History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides and then dive into Plato. I hope this helps.
