I fully understand people finding certain subject matter off-putting to the point of not wanting to read about it. What I don't understand is people, adults who read, not grasping the narrative context of those unpleasant things looking right past the book and at the author as though they are an advocate.
I suspect it is people immured in that YA mindset where if things don't have a "this is bad" sign hanging off them the default assumption is that it is being endorsed, but idk cause I am seeing it everywhere these days.

I've never thought of myself as a horror fan, but I'm more and more turning to people like Lovecraft, CA Smith and Robert Chambers to get my weird fanatasy fix. I like that their stories have a sense of the unknown.

And I love Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe's dying earth settings, where the characters stumble over an ancient mystery every chapter and leave them after having only scratched the surface.

I enjoy books that are formatted as a loosely connected series of short stories. The idea of reading a multi-volume series with interconnected plots and subplots with an ensemble cast is repulsive.

I have read a lot of military history, and I've been disappointed to discover that fantasy warfare is usually somehow less interesting. One exception I can think of is the Redwall novels. I have an urge to read Redwall again, but I'm afraid that it won't be as good as I remember. Damn, I remember it being really good! I remember the duel for leadership between the two rats among the beached wrecks of their fleet, and the straight blade/undulating blade sword the victor carried. There are so many great mental images that still stick with me even though its been 20 years since I read them.

At the end of Bakker what is up Cnoir developing a God-like voice and growing four horns? Ajokli had Khellus and then he gets got. But Khellus wasn't blind to his son, so he would have seen that one coming. I was thinking he double crossed the Gods and always planned to get dusted and have the No God emerge. I think this will give him leverage on the Gods since their soul buffet will be stopped. Also he said he didn't fear Hell because he will go as a hunter, so I think he'll be fine in damnation since he can btfo the Ciphrang. Also, what's with the Solitary God? Khellus talks about God as a unitary one too and the whole Absolute shit sounds like Hegel where the Absolute is God, so is Khellus working on destroying the Hundred?

Enjoying "grimderp" is a far cry from advocating for the contents of grimdark in the real world. And specifically in the case of Bakker he chose a world based on the old testament metaphysics because it was the inverse of his own beliefs about the world.

The corruption of the male half of the source was a sacrifice that the ungrateful female aes sedai used to slander the man who saved them.
The entire underlying theme of the series is "Different but equal", Jordan isn't even subtle about it, he beats you over the head with it.

The Chalion series by Lois McMaster Bujold. I say this every time I recommend it, but it's the only series I've read that actually does justice to religion as a concept. So many fantasy authors either go the "duh church is baaad" route, or just treat gods as if they're just glorified wizards, or completely ignore religion altogether, it was refreshing to read something where religion is a core part of the culture.
