Book has a weird love of constantly removing tension by telling you what is going to happen in the future. The main character is very well written but the rest of the book never gets up to his level

Antibakker samefag having another episode
This is why, kids, you get a good boy pills prescription from your local jewish doctor to make you nice and calm

>> No.18957110

I've never thought of myself as a horror fan, but I'm more and more turning to people like Lovecraft, CA Smith and Robert Chambers to get my weird fanatasy fix. I like that their stories have a sense of the unknown.

And I love Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe's dying earth settings, where the characters stumble over an ancient mystery every chapter and leave them after having only scratched the surface.

I enjoy books that are formatted as a loosely connected series of short stories. The idea of reading a multi-volume series with interconnected plots and subplots with an ensemble cast is repulsive.

I have read a lot of military history, and I've been disappointed to discover that fantasy warfare is usually somehow less interesting. One exception I can think of is the Redwall novels. I have an urge to read Redwall again, but I'm afraid that it won't be as good as I remember. Damn, I remember it being really good! I remember the duel for leadership between the two rats among the beached wrecks of their fleet, and the straight blade/undulating blade sword the victor carried. There are so many great mental images that still stick with me even though its been 20 years since I read them.

You misunderstand. Obviously there are writers who make worlds where only bad grimderp happens. But they create those worlds because that's how they view the real world- or they enjoy grimderp. Writing takes a long time and most people aren't going to type out 200,000 words about things they don't enjoy thinking about. Even if the enjoyment is cathartic or masochistic.

At the end of Bakker what is up Cnoir developing a God-like voice and growing four horns? Ajokli had Khellus and then he gets got. But Khellus wasn't blind to his son, so he would have seen that one coming. I was thinking he double crossed the Gods and always planned to get dusted and have the No God emerge. I think this will give him leverage on the Gods since their soul buffet will be stopped. Also he said he didn't fear Hell because he will go as a hunter, so I think he'll be fine in damnation since he can btfo the Ciphrang. Also, what's with the Solitary God? Khellus talks about God as a unitary one too and the whole Absolute shit sounds like Hegel where the Absolute is God, so is Khellus working on destroying the Hundred?

Enjoying "grimderp" is a far cry from advocating for the contents of grimdark in the real world. And specifically in the case of Bakker he chose a world based on the old testament metaphysics because it was the inverse of his own beliefs about the world.

I think you should stop trying to generalize the motivations and morality of every author to ever exist.

We will just have to wait for the next series to find those things out.

Kelmomas is outside of Kellhus' control or plans, as seen during the time when he kills Sorweel. Kellhus's thinks he is mad.

With regards to the God of Gods, you will be surprised to know, as some anon pointed out once here, that he will probably make an appearence through Mimara's child, just akin to the new testement. Mimara herself saw a blinding light when looking down at her belly using the Judging eye.

Agreed. If you think I said otherwise, then you've misunderstood, or you're confusing me with somebody else.

People don't write grimderp because they think grimderp is morally good or whatever. But people don't write grimderp if they don't *like thinking* about grimderp.

Obviously there's nothing wrong with enjoying thinking about grimderp, and that's different from wanting to actually live in a grimderp world.

But maybe somebody writes a 200k word book about torturing small animals and setting fires. Most people don't enjoy thinking about those things and couldn't do it for the amount of time it takes to write a novel.

Because what I said had nothing to do with imagination or "perspective". I didn't use those terms, you did.

My point is simple. People write what they enjoy thinking about. If I've written 30 western novels, it's reasonable to assume I like cowboys.

You clearly completely missed the point. Jordan wen out of his way to shit all over the man-hating feminist types. The Aes Sedai literally live in an ivory tower on vagina island, and are the primary antagonists for like 80% of the series. Claiming that the series depicts women as better than men is ridiculously stupid.
The negative portrayal of men early in the series is literally in-universe misandry. Lews Therin's plan partially failed because the women refused to help while having no plan of their own. The corruption of the male half of the source was a sacrifice that the ungrateful female aes sedai used to slander the man who saved them.
The entire underlying theme of the series is "Different but equal", Jordan isn't even subtle about it, he beats you over the head with it.

So is prince of nothing worth reading?
The last threads spiked my interest but now all the trashing here makes me reconsider.

If you don't mind intense battles, pitch black lore, highly intellectual themes that dovetail into real world philosophy, poignant character psychology, and just a hint of Lovecraftian horror then it might be the book for you!

Try paying attention to the way women are portrayed in this series. For 3000 years they've been masters of the world and as a result the world is on the precipice of disaster by the time Lews Therin is reborn again. The custom of gentling nearly culled the One Power from humanity and resulting in Aes Sedai growing weaker and fewer in number. Aes Sedai managed to lose knowledge of countless skills due to their fear of experimentation and being content to simply do what came easily to them. They allowed the Black Ajah to infest their ranks because rooting them out would require upending their ancient traditions, and they couldn't have that.

It's hilarious that the Aes Sedai existed for 3000 years and yet the Asha'man were able to rival their numbers and power after existing for about a year, simply because the men were utterly fearless about experimenting with the One Power and willing to train anyone while the Aes Sedai were extremely selective and wasted their time memorizing 3000 year old parlor tricks.
