When you think about it, there's no reason to read fiction other than just pure entertainment. If you think you become 'enlightened', what use is that on a day to day basis? If you were an author you could've channeled it in your writing, if you were a cult leader you could've enchanted your followers with nuggets of wisdom, if you're an opinioniated public speaker you could've dabbed on liberals and amass a cluster of fascist fanbase on Youtube. For you, a nothing, the 'enlightnment' that comes from books just sits there pointless, purposeless. Besides, none of the insight you *think* you pick up stays with you more than week after reading the book anyway

But I'm an author

Many activities we do are for entertainment. There are activities such as going to the gym which can improve physical health or learning which expands our minds, but to what end? If you're going to say reading fiction is pointless because it's for entertainment, you may as well cast aside anything else we do for entertainment and live a miserable life. Entertainment makes us feel good, what point is there in living a life that you can't enjoy? Stop taking yourself so seriously you absolute fag

>If you're going to say reading fiction is pointless because it's for entertainment
It's not the activity that's pointless, it's the enlightenment that comes from reading that's pointless if you're a nobody

Yeah I agree all fiction is just escapism, and I don't even think literary fiction is superior in any way to film, TV, or even video games and visual novels. I played Pathologic 2 recently and I had a more vivid and immersive fictional experience than in any book i've read. Books are kind of a meme.

You could say the same thing about an other form of leisure. At least being well-read makes you acquainted with more information and arguably a better writer, which is useful for employment.

>>18951248
Maybe, but books have a longer lifespan than other media.

Agreed, I only read history, philosophy, and theology.

Reading for 'pure entertainment' is retarded. No great masterpiece will ever compete with the dopamine shots you'll receive from doing drugs, eating junk food, fucking a hooker, getting through a fight, beating a videogame, or pumping iron in a gym.
For a seeker of pure thoughtless hedonism literature has nothing to offer, in a rapidly interactive, pleasure-brimmed world, an act of sitting in total silence and staring at letters writter centuries ago could be compared to a mild form of masochism
