18939524 No.18939524 [Reply] [Original]

>When there is a build up of seed in a man’s marrow, and it becomes copious and profuse, like a tree overladen with fruit, his desires and their satisfaction bring him agony and pleasure, time after time. The pleasures and pains are so intense that he spends most of his life in a crazed state, but although his soul has been infected with mindlessness by his body, he’s not generally held to be ill, but to be a bad man, by his own choice. In actual fact, however, sexual incontinence is a soul-sickness caused largely by the presence in the body, thanks to the porousness of the bones, of just a single substance, in profuse enough quantities to moisten it. And indeed, hardly any of the bad behavior which is commonly attributed to lack of control in the face of pleasure and is said to be shameful, as if it were freely chosen, should really be held against a person. For no one is bad of his own choice: an unhealthy body and a vulgar upbringing are what make a bad man bad, and these are afflictions that no one chooses to have.
Thanks Plato

He's right about this, it's distracting being constantly assailed by urges, while guiltless, convenient relief of hunger and lust frees the reasoning mind.
What's this from?

So Plato didn't think it was possible to be a Philosopher and live a completely ascetic life?

>"Men do indeed speak ill of those occupations which are called handicrafts, and they are rightly held of little repute in communities, because they weaken the bodies of those who make their living at them by compelling them to sit and pass their days indoors. Some indeed work all the time by a fire. But when the body becomes effeminate (thelunomenos) the mind too is debilitated. Besides, these mechanical occupations (banausos) leave a man no leisure to attend to his friends' interests, or the public interest. This class therefore cannot be of much use to his friends or defend his country. Indeed, some states, especially the most warlike, do not allow a citizen to engage in these handicraft occupations."
