He's definitely not charming

He's wrong about ''prior to'' as well..think of it in terms of ''a priori to'' and it makes sense..

Even DFW would've laughed at you for calling him the greatest writer of all time. He'd also recognize, like so many other writers, what a horrible title that would truly be. The greatest writer of all time would be an immensely sad and pathetic person on many levels.

he is "charming." by that i mean that he tries really really hard to be charming when his natural inclination is to be self satisfied and condescending. i know guys just like him and they all went to to top schools. they're all completely smug shitheads. Every interview with DFW is just him trying to cover up for his snobbery. it's like he's trying really really hard to be human. the guy was a freakshow.

>> No.1893152

>>1893138

that is completely untrue. i don't know where this whole self-proclaimed genius thing came from, oh wait, it's everyone ELSE calling him a genius constantly, then criticizing him for his apparently smug persona. you only think he's trying to cover it up because you assume there is smugness in the first place.

he actually said that he doesn't want to think other people are not as intelligent as him, because then he'd be writing for dumb people, and he doesn't want that, he wants to write for people who will understand his work.

>> No.1893168

>>1893138
he isn't charming at all. I don't even think he's trying to be. the 'charm', from what I can tell, comes from the guy being socially stunted, realising he is, and trying to fix it; for all his efforts though, he's never quite 'normal'. people detect his effort, they detect his failure, they feel almost sorry for the guy - maybe even empathise with him, and they mistake this endearement, this sympathy - like one would have for a wounded puppy - as charm.

>> No.1893172

>>1893168
that, and he's a famous writer. it's easy to be charming when people already think you're a god.

>> No.1893212

>>1893168

Have you actually read Infinite Jest? Hal is basically himself, and finds himself in many situation where he starts acting awkward like DFW does, but his feelings show that he's just nervous and self-conscious and has so many things going through his head about others will see him.

>> No.1893218

>>1893212
This kind of reads like you're trying to counter him, but you just affirmed everything he said.

>> No.1893236

>>1893218

So you admit he's just shy/awkward/self-conscious but still act like he's a creep or something. This is all from interviews too, you know he might just have been nervous because he was on TV?

Watch the most recent interview, (clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39UJuPogwiY)) where he's probably gotten used to it, he's completely calm and normal.
