Pick a random Tolkien book, select a page at random, and select any paragraph you wish.

Tolkien appeals to nerds who idealize honor, loyalty, purity etc. the whole system of moralism. They also want the good guys to always win. For them good art means emotional uplift and consolation.

Be he foe or friend, be he foul or clean,
brood of Morgoth or bright Vala,
Elda or Maia or Aftercomer,
Man yet unborn upon Middle-earth,
neither law, nor love, nor league of swords,
dread nor danger, not Doom itself,
shall defend him from Fëanor, and Fëanor's kin,
whoso hideth or hoardeth, or in hand taketh,
finding keepeth or afar casteth
a Silmaril. This swear we all:
death we will deal him ere Day's ending,
woe unto world's end! Our word hear thou,
Eru Allfather! To the everlasting
Darkness doom us if our deed faileth.
On the holy mountain hear in witness
and our vow remember, Manwë and Varda!

Good loses in Tolkien's work, Evil in his work destroys it's self; in plenty of instances of his work too, victory comes at a cost.
Frodo is forever scarred by his encounter with the Ring Wraithes and must pass to Valinor to continue living at all. Túrin in the Silmarillion perishes after his battle with Glaurung, after years of gruelling warfare had destroyed his life.
Feanor brought about mass murder in the name of honour. His works have a lot more complicated morality than the nerds who read him realise.

Good always prevails in the end, even if the victory is bittersweet. That's because Tolkien believes in the kind of cheap optimism guaranteed by Providence. He also interprets the world in terms of good evil as opposed to an interplay of conflicting interests. He is fundamentally a moralist and a theologian.

>> No.18902891

>>18902881
He is yes, but he does not believe that good prevails, and a major point throughout his collected works is the decline of good; as evil returns again and again. The age he lived through being a climax to the collapse of good, and rise of evil in his mind. And is he wrong? Look at the world.

>> No.18903151

>>18902891
He does believe that good prevails in the end. All (traditional) Christians believe that good prevails in the end because it is part of their creed. And in Tolkien's case this is clearly reflected in his works. Yes good declines, but is never eliminated and evil is destined to loose in the end. The only way to counter the charge of lazy optimism would be to affirm the theological case, and it seems you don't want to do that.
>The age he lived through being a climax to the collapse of good, and rise of evil in his mind. And is he wrong? Look at the world.
Talking in terms of good vs evil merely obscures the facts. There are certain historical developments since his lifetime that we may like and others we may deplore.

Tolkien is a Pre Vatican ll Catholic. His works are inherently Catholic in nature. Also a closer reading of Tolkien reveals that it isn't "good wins in the end", it's more of a "when good men act, the long defeat is delayed". The elves and much of the magic of the world is leaving Middle Earth at the end of Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien abandoned his own attempt at a sequel because the world of men was much darker than the third age. If you're a leftist atheist urbanite you can't understand Tolkien.

>Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them.E´ omer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first e´ored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but The´oden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome¨ the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.
