Genre fiction is any story created to explicitly appeal to fans of existing stories. It often refers to sci-fi, fantasy, noir, and westerns, but also includes novels about novelists struggling to write novels. Genre is the storytelling technique of the managerial class because its rule-abiding nature resembles a bureaucracy.

What do you consider stories that use the trappings of genre fiction but telling stories that defy or move away from the conventions of their genres? Things like Blood Meridian for westerns, or Book of the New Sun for sci-fi?
