18889279 No.18889279 [Reply] [Original]

I'm doing it lads.

Through an immense stroke of fortune im in a position to purchase a small piece of land and an old cottage. I am located somewhere in western Europe.

My plan is to slowly reduce my need for employment by producing and selling various things on the land: eggs, honey, crafts, etc. I will also produce a decent bit of my own food.

Please recommend books, both practical and philosophical/abstract regarding self sufficiency, "dropping out", exiting modernity, living off of the land, "alternative lifestyles", etc.

I'm interesting in both fiction and non fiction.

None of those are proper philosophers though, except maybe Heidegger. Nietzsche is the archetypal irrationalist polemicist, and he advocates wandering rather than living off the land.

In the United States, we have these things called land grant Universities, which are public Universities funded under the condition that they maintain a commitment to agriculture and the local community. As a result, many of these have extension education programs for small farmers and homesteaders with enormous libraries of literature and networks of people. They were largely in person, but once COVID happened they all moved online and started offering their materials there for free. If you want real, practical advice on small-scale homesteading and farming that isn’t trying to fill a commercial niche, you should start by seeing if you can get access to one of these online. They’re also a good resource for articles, blogs, and the like on just about every agricultural topic you can imagine. I wrote a few articles for one of them before. Even the writing side of things might be a way of earning a little bit of income for you.

I’d rather not link my article because my name and contact information is on them but if you just search like “agricultural extension” or “land grant agricultural extension” you should find something along the lines of what I’m talking about. They’re hosted by US universities for free.

I should probably add here that they’re funded with the sense that it’s supposed to be science-based education and as a result the education tends towards a very modern approach to agriculture. But in truth, it’s not just that. At least the one that’s I’m affiliated with understands there’s a want and need for traditional methods of agriculture and so they make it a point to offer education along those lines as well. The hippie influence has this enter into sort of woo woo territory sometimes but there is good stuff that’s free from all that stuff and they do work with people who are actually out there doing this and have been for a very long time.

DUDE i just LOVE the hustle and bustle of the big city, it’s so DYNAMIC and makes me feel like i’m in one of my favourite TV SHOWS. you should totally come on down to my studio apartment, it’s got EXPOSED RED BRICK walls and everything, we can crack open a nice hoppy ipa or three and get crazy watching some cartoons on adult swim! and dude, dude, DUDE, we have GOTTA go down to the barcade- listen here, right, it’s a BAR where us ADULTS who do ADULTING can go DRINK. BUT!!!! it’s also an ARCADE like when we were kids, so we can play awesome VIDEO GAMES, without dumb kids bothering us. speaking of which megan and i have finally decided to tie the knot- literally -we’re both getting snipped tomorrow at the hospital, that way we can save money to spent more on ourselves and our FURBABIES. i’m fuckin JACKED man, i’m gonna SLAM this craft beer and pop open another one!!!

Cities are where the poor go to die or sustain themselves on a shit job. Rich people have a dwelling in a city but invariably spend most of their free time in a country house having parties and shit in privacy. The only real thing money can buy you is privacy. How sure are you about this? Agriculture is a large industry and people who work full time with way more resources and land than you are your competition, and they're not rich either.

>> No.18891121
