Basically read anything about her. If they're trying to be kind to her the worst they're going to say is mean drunk, or racist, or kind of rapey. If they're being less kind, they'll talk about her harassing the parents of a murder victim for details, or how she thought murder was an act of love which is why she didn't kill her mother, or how she liked to fuck new gfs in exgfs beds, sometimes as a way to make them an ex sometimes just cuz, or about how she would show up drunk and unannounced after no contact for twenty years to throw a tantrum. Yeah, her books are great. She's really good at laying out a murder and characters. Sometimes you wind up hating people because they didn't kill someone, or liking them because they did. She's also one of those writers who has no problem with every character's plans failing, regardless of if their intentions were good or bad. The Cry of the Owl and Deep Water are two early ones that show that without being already famous for their gimmick (like Strangers on a Train is usually reduced to its basic premise, not to say that it is gimmicky)
Any of her books are a good start, but obviously the Ripleyiad makes more sense in order. Weirdly, The Price of Salt, her lesbian novel, is often called the only happy lesbian novel. The rest I've read are misanthropic as fuck.

Reading shit for school usually fucks any book. I think I'd have liked Of Mice and Men, because I love all Steinbeck's other shit, but I had to listen to it at a fucking snail's pace with retarded commentary in school so it does nothing for me. All his other shit made me cry like a baby.
Some females are good writers, but basically don't listen to any feminist on the subject because they'll recommend shit books they haven't read. I hear more about Highsmith from guys, like how guys recommend Dashiell Hammett while girls will recommend Agatha Christie.
