I'm on page 10 and this guy is fucking insufferable. This is a book /lit/ simps for? This is Catcher in the Rye, but even worse, because at least Holden was a teenager, and teenagers are inherently annoying.

I read his "Schoolgirl" and couldn't stand it. Such a pointless loser mindset is hard to come by. Why should I read/associate with misery when all it does is mirror itself onto me?

One of the authors I respect the least.

I'm reading this one next and now looking forward to it more than ever.
Thanks, anon.

Why?
This is the book I'm going to read next.

Are you a woman? Perhaps a fantasy reader who got recommended this book by an eceleb?

Maybe you should just stay in your lane and read the mango

>actually he's hideous
>this is the kid older! Now he's handsome
>nvm he looks super weird actually
>this is him older
>he looks weird again and he lives in trash
>i liked this thing, but then it sucked
>i never really cared about food
>actually, it was horrible, and trying to force myself to eat was agony

No. Only a woman or a YA tier reader thinks the protagonist needs to someone they'd like in real life for the book to be enjoyable. Although your sperging above confirms the latter.

One of the few times where the manga adaptation was better

You get to watch him gradually destroy his life and make himself miserable. It's like reading about CWC. You hate him, but watching him suffer due to his own bad decisions is satisfying.

holy shit, I still can't believe that last twist.

I didn't like it very much but it was a quick read. They made a movie version of it a year or so ago (but I think they blend the book together with Dazai's actual life).

Anyway, I'm probably going to give it a second chance one day--I didn't hate it/think it was terrible (just disappointing based on how hyped it is).

t. bitter adult that will never get prime teenage pussy
The narrator is far too human, he becomes completely alienated from the everyday life precisely because he’s so introspective, you would know if you were able to do the same bugman

No, I'd have to agree with OP. The conflicted morality of the narrator comes off as shallow and renders him pathetic instead of sympathetic. The "he was a good boy" call for reappraisal doesn't function properly as a device and some readers will just end up rolling their eyes.

If you liked the book, good for you. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot to criticize about it. I plan to give it a second chance after watching pic.

It's a book that /lit/ newfags simp for. Anyone who has actually read some literature in their lives will tell you it's shit.

Your wording makes you sound like a contrarian edgelord but I've read a few of Dazai's short stories and they were equally shallow. Run, Milos! and No Longer Human are pretty good indicators of what you're going to get out of his work.

That said, it's not that good. Might be better in Japanese idk.

Side question: why does every Japanese work of fiction involve a character who finds university easy but still isn't happy?

when I first read It, I had a constant feeling that Yobo was faking the entire thing and I don't mean in the way that none of the events happened, but rather he was looking back and exaggerating/ making up things to make himself seem more different to how he actually was.
