I liked George Orwell when I was a teenager, and Kerouac. I'd also recommend Cormac McCarthy and William Golding.

How is Fight Club bad?

>> No.1888222

It's not bad. Just extremely overrated.

>> No.1888224

My Immortal by Tara Gilespie. The most underrated novel of all time. I believe the average young adult can relate to the harsh yet humorous, satirical format in which it presents its observations of the flaws found in modern youth culture.

>> No.1888230

>>1888219
It is a decent book, but it one of the very rare case in which the movie is better than the book.

Really? I thought it deserved the acclaim it got. The prose is pretty fresh, the storyline is cool, and some of the, I dare say, societal commentary you could pull from it as an overanalyzing asshole were pretty nice, too. Got me to respect the working class a bit more. It's not like anybody's calling Palahniuk the Shakespeare of our time. It was still pretty good, though.

Here's my reasoning:

-Chuck tries to be deep and edgy

-He comes off as some 13 year old trying to establish himself as an individual

>> No.1888416

>>1888235
Nobody's calling him Shakespeare, but people talk about him WAY too much relative to other writers. And his social commentary is negligible and hardly provocative.

You're looking at it the wrong way. It's not supposed to be brilliant or groundbreaking or provocative, it's just about feeling powerless being part of the working class and dealing with these feelings. It kind of helps you understand why poor inner-city people form gangs and vandalise shit. And it's pretty entertaining. If you go into it thinking it's supposed to be edgy or groundbreaking, you'll be supremely disappointed. It really is a decent book. It's not Lolita or Johnny Got His Gun or any of that shit, but it's decent. Also, I've never seen anybody comparing Palahniuk to any great writers. I'm not sure what kind of psychopath is saying Fight Club needs to be a Penguin Classic.

>> No.1889956

With the exception of super-dense Modern or pomo lit, you can read pretty much anything, although I guarantee you won't understand it as deeply as an adult, experience reader will. But this is okay, you have to start somewhere.
>>1888145
I read it in high school and I thought it was shit. Yes, I've always been smarter than my peers. Go climb a wall of dicks and fall off into a pool of dicks.
>>1889924
So you're saying it's not good, and that's why it's worthwhile? Fuck yourself, kid. If it's shit, it's shit. There are many novels about how shitty modern life is that are far more entertaining than Fight Club.
>I've never seen anybody comparing Palahniuk to any great writers.
I have. And the fact that he *cannot* be compared to these writers is why you shouldn't read him. He's a waste of time.
