Let's just say his novellas were short stories, for the sake of argument (although I can only think of The Metamorphosis).

What's the problem here?

YOU COULD JUST AS EASILY BUMP HIS NOVELLAS UP TO NOVELS, INSTEAD OF BUMPING THEM DOWN TO SHORT STORIES.

What a bizarre question. Some short stories are works of genius, some are meh (by Kafka's standards). All the novels are great (although I guess I've never read The Castle all the way through). I suppose I could work out how to answer your question on a personal level by asking myself which I'd rather be stuck with: The short stories (which you're saying includes the metamorphosis) or the novels. As far that goes though I really don't know. On the one hand there's The Trial, and on the other hand The Judgment, The Village Schoolmaster and An Urban World. All of those are in my opinion works of genius and there's no limit to what you can get out of them. So the question still seems unanswerable. Long story short: It's all fucking amazing.

I mean one of the problems is that the best parts of some of the novels are short stories themselves, such as the parable of the Law from The Trial and The Stoker from Amerika.

His short stories are complete, his novels are not

The end

I'm on the halfway of The Castle, i really liked it, but i love Kafka's style, you might not.
Have you finish reading The Metamorphosis?

Deleuze and Guattari have some interesting things to say about the different functions the short stories/fragments/letters/aborted novels take in Kafka's ouevre

>> No.1887060

basically they point out how the short stories often concern themselves with a 'becoming animal' in various ways as a type of escape, but that this is abandoned in the novels, which investigate the proliferation of various series which in fact become interminable, hence why he could never finish the novels; the trial can go on indefinitely, his entrance to the castle is permanently deferred etc. etc.
