Glad this is finally getting the attention it deserves.

I'm curious though, has anyone ever read GRRM's Tales of Dunk and Egg? Thoughts on them? I'm sure they're worth a read, but I'm curious how much they reveal about the history of the ASOIAF series, such as Robert's Rebellion.

>> No.1885769

I don't read fantasy. I only read mature fiction for mature readers such as myself.
Sage for off-topic.

Thanks ass-face. Do you get off by ruining people's books for them?

I was trying to look for a real conversation about some literature. I suppose I was wrong to look for that on a literature board?

if it makes you feel any better its at the end of the book which makes it a cliffhanger and probably means he lives

All literature is is a body of written works.

Just because you don't happen to enjoy a particular genre doesn't make it not literature.

Dunk and Egg reveals a certain amount of history.
But a lot of that history is already out there. What it does is flesh it out some.

What might connect to the larger series is all the information you get about Aegon the Unworthy's bastards.
We've seen and will see much more of Bloodraven, but it is possible that Bittersteel might show up at some point - or that we will get information that informs on the Golden Company - which is probably heavily featured in Dance.

Lit isn't 5 years old.
But of course you're just trolling me and not a newbie in for the summer right? RIGHT?

i'd like to see a Robert's Rebellion miniseries while we wait for series 2. That would be beyond awesome.

There's a lot of information about the days of Robert's Rebellion that you get in bits and pieces throughout the series (which slowly start to reveal at a lot of secrets, such as Jon Snow's mother for example) which I'm concerned that they're leaving out in the show.

As an example of what I mean, but without giving anything new away...

In A Game of Thrones, GRRM drops very subtle hints that Lord Renly and Ser Loras are gay together. Many people don't pick up on it. I personally didn't the first time I read it, but figured it out the second go round.

Then in the show, to make things easier, they just made it blatantly obvious.

As for Jon's mother, I believe I know who it is, and it's actually someone very significant; assuming I'm correct. It could go two ways though:
1.) Jon's going to find out and it becomes very essential in the story.
or
2.) GRRM doesn't actually intend to come out openly about it, and actually wants to keep it a secret for only the most attentive readers, and it will actually have no significance in the story, and is just really interesting.

Who cares, it's obviously Lyanna anyway. You can argue about Jon's father, but with all the blue rose stuff there's no disputing it's Lya.

Like I said, to attentive readers it's apparent.

I was trying to be subtle for the sake of those that aren't. But since we're out there now... I'm also pretty confident that his father is Rhaegar, hence why I think it could possibly be really essential to the story line.

Wat. It's been a bestseller for quite some time, and one of a very few fantasy novels that's considered acceptable among people that normally scorn the genre.

>> No.1885939

The Dunk and Egg stories are neat, because they show the world from a point of view we haven't really seen before, that of a hedge knight. And they do include a lot of characters who were important in their day, and so influenced the main stories of the novels. For example, Maester Aemon was alive during the Dunk and Egg stories (saying much more might be a spoiler).

They have nothing to do with Robert's Rebellion, at least not directly and not yet. The King at the time of Dunk and Egg is 4 kings before Robert. So, about 60-70 years before Robert's Rebellion.

I just had a friend suggest it to me about 3 years ago.

I guess I've been under a rock.

Oh, also, there are comic books of the Dunk and Egg stories that are very faithful to the novellas. Last I checked, /rs/ had them all.
