Anyone over 50 will have a physical reaction of you mention the names of any post-modern writer (Gaddis, Pynchon, Barth, etc).
But in terms of awkwardness the definitive answer is Lolita as marxist/socialist literature will result in an angry discussion and they will disregard any juvenile writers like DFW or Murakami.
