The amount of insane fucking driving I've seen since the onset of the covid/blm shitshow is beyond your guys' comprehension. Not to mention, a lot of these cars are beaten up, missing license plates, 99% stolen from somebody and used as a homeless camp-dweller's joyride for a few eeks before they torch it and dump it somewhere. You call the cops, they won't show up for hours. There's like twelve of them working at a time for less than flipping burgers wages.
We have zero mental health infrastructure and our best bet at a homeless shelter to at least BEGIN containing these people was refurbishing a prison, but reed college type students protested it because they didn't like the imagery of housing homeless people in a building that used to be a prison.
It's unlivable, except for the richest neighborhoods which have geographic barriers to keep the homeless from getting there. I hope to god we get a law-and-order civic government but I don't think it's gonna happen.

You mentioned the bus and rail systems. It might also help having decent infrastructure across the country. Good infrastructure and public transportation attract homeless people. Car-centric cities don't have as many homeless. I'm guessing this isn't as big of a problem in Europe where overall homeless rates are about the same but they're more evenly spread out.

I've been saying it for years: universal literacy was a mistake. If Oregon is doing their part to pare down the herd, I say let everyone else follow suit, as long as higher education maintains its (faltering) standards.
