He should have done what many authors do and shamelessly adapted a plot from a successful book from the past (as opposed to pulling random elements together from harry potter and earthsea and so on). His prose is actually OK, and he brought some good "worldbuilding" ideas to the table. But his characters and his plotting are atrocious - he is like the end game of fantasy drifting farther and farther from myth and folklore, and closer and closer to D&D. Whenever I think about Name of the Wind, I always feel like it is a wasted opportunity. He could have used the frame narrative so well to build up an "epic fantasy story" with an unreliable narrator, but it feels like that never happens and it is totally unironic that Kvothe is an unmitigated badass in every single way. So it ends up feeling like Rothfuss doesn't know what he's doing. I'm sure he and his money don't care that much and best wishes to him, but it could have been so much better with just one intelligent developmental edit.

Outside of the obvious ones like old heroic epics, LOTR, Dune, etc. I just like the old school pulpy fantasy like Kane, Elric, etc. that are at least well-written schlock; things like His Dark Materials, fairytales (from Akutagawa to collections that are mostly public domain). I admit I bundle soft sci-fi and folk stories into fantasy so my definition is rather broad.
That said I haven't read genre fiction in a while and I'm sure that if picked up most of the things I remember being decent I would change my mind about them.
Rothfuss is on a whole another level though. It reads like a 14 year old virgin's attempt at a real novel after writing fanfiction.

The men that are being described are just used by the girl Denna for money and gifts, she never sleeps with them (at least it isn't said so in the books). This is the problem of being a retard and making fun of pop-book you haven't read, you just end up displaying how retard you are.

I mostly agree with this take. I've read The Meme of the Wind twice and it was worse the second time around. Rothfuss is good like Gaiman is good: they are not good, they are just popular with people (see typical YA women and their orbiters) with low standards of quality and subsequently equate entertainment with quality. Both Gaiman and Rothfuss have too great a chasm between their strengths and weaknesses as writers, which makes their weaknesses unforgivable and holds their writing back from being worth any serious analysis.

So what's the deal with this guy? Did he just give up after people read the second book and started meming on how much of a Gary Stu his character was?

It's obvious he wrote himself into a corner and is a bit embarrassed by it, and I suspect that the only satisfying way out of it is for some massive unreliable narrator reveal (which I suspect might have been the plan all along), but he won't pull the trigger.

I think he never planned it out (properly..). It was all just a grand narrative to get you to feel his emotions and thats it. Him listening to people analyse his book and pull more from it than he put in while then promising it as a trilogy is why you think the 2nd book is meh. Its patty trying to keep the spirit of the first while knowing that his emotion porn needs to be structured to finish in 3 books. Which is where the dnd feel comes from, and why the third is never coming out.
I liked the 2nd personally, he built up the tragic romance so much that the only partner to it would be a sex goddess
