It was hated for all the wrong reasons on release, but Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs has absolutely kino writing (in notes and such), and the dialogue is excellent too. If you like your lit to be 19th c. and British then you'll love its oppressive atmosphere and eldritch setting.

No time to neck, mate. Mother 3 is one of the few games with a direct anti-globalist commentary.
It's not an immersive sim like Deus Ex, a series which provides a middle ground for this particular subject.
In Mother 3 mercenaries from different time eras join an army (the Pigmask) lead by a globalist (Porky) who propagates culturelessness and consumerism.
Slowly he corrupts the values of a small pagan society, disconnecting them from mother nature.
Mother 3 is simultaneously Ulysses and the Unabomber manifesto, and there isn't anything else like it.
Anything else, Burgermutt?

Unironically, what's wrong with you is feeling shameful about your hobby, assuming you don't let it consume your entire life. It's mental cuckery. Maybe this quote by C.S. Lewis will make you feel better:

“When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Fairy tales aren't a 1:1 comparison, but the point is that being an adult and feeling ashamed about the things you like is more childish than enjoying things.

Yeah its development is one of the most screwed over I've heard about — the damn release plays more like an alpha more than anything, but goddamn it would've forever been a classic if things aligned properly. Sucks that it makes the rounds mostly as a money-grab, I agree.
The level I was on about was the very last one, where it manages to merge gameplay and story that rewards the player for indulging in it, even within the confines of a linear narrative. Games often struggle with doing incorporating their storyline with their gameplay (RoR does, too) and though you can see good examples here and there, most are short-lived in favor of the play --> story --> play --> story exchange typically implemented.
>Lord of the Flies
Been interested in it even more after seeing all the comparisons online. I also liked how the game actually does feel like a fairy tale, esp if you change the time period appropriately.

Games are games, art is art. Why try to mix this shit up? Videogames are closer to the roulette, dice, or some football match than they are to a book. Just play it if you like.

Surprised nobody mentioned Killer7, the only game worth talking about in this manner, every other game mentioned in this thread is literally YA/genre fiction except maybe MGS2, but that’s only at the end when it gets “literary”

Art a vague term that can be applied to anything.
Football is structured around team co-operation while most VGs are centered on the experience of the individual player.
Roulette & Dice are somewhat based on luck while most games are on skill or intuition.
The thread is mostly about the writing quality as far as I can tell.

can’t believe nobody mentioned ffxvi. shits deeper than half of western philosophy. Only game in existence where u literally lose halfway thru and u have to pick up the pieces and process what the fuck just happened, and the cultural impact. No other game has the fucking balls to do that, it wouldn’t work with modern audiences

divine cybermancy is basically a legitimate work of very personal outsider art like Henry darger

of course Morrowind is lit, and many roguelikes have their own merits

You've meant XIV buddy, and the reason why it's so under-talked is because it's an MMO which is mostly enjoyed by boomer audiences and rich people.

I can't pay attention to the story in games. The games I enjoy I play for gameplay and the story segments are too fragmented or disjointed for me to follow and get involved. Any time I try to play a story driven game like a CRPG or Persona I get bored and would rather be reading a book.

Finished this one recently, my run was surprisingly short but I liked it a lot, didn't expect it to be this political and philosophical. Felt like it was a realistic portrayal of an ancap world (even though that term is a stupid oxymoron) and it seemed like they were mocking hegel with the anarchist camp, lol.
Sucks that they're doing this stupid "exclusive title" fuckery for the sequel. I'll never buy a fucking xbox.

A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World: YU-NO.
Captures a perfect aesthetic of nostalgia with its synthesis of visuals, music, and writing, which aids in its meta critique of how visual novels and general otaku media is escapism. There was a novel that I've forgotten the name of by some Japanese postmodern philosopher that gives a more elaborate critique of it but it goes too far off the deep end for my tastes.

Original, the remake changes far too much. There's translation patch by TLWiki that gives the best possible experience by mixing the PC-98 visuals with the later releases' voice acting. I don't have a link to it but I'm sure there's a torrent for it floating around somewhere.

Found it, it's called "Otaku: Japan's Database Animals". I didn't find it particularly insightful and felt it was all over the place, but maybe I just wasn't familiar enough with the background material.
Also just a heads up, when I say that YU-NO is the most /lit/ visual novel I'm not saying it's good, just that it has a lot of traits that this board tends to like in novels. It can be a real slog to get through, especially with the point and click interface, so I have trouble earnestly recommending it to anyone. If it doesn't grab you immediately, don't force yourself through it since it's all about the journey and there is no real destination.
