Halfway through. Does she ever stop despising manlets? I'm not saying she has to find them attractive, but every manlet in the book is depicted as a rank, fiendish, opportunistic gremlin who is either completely inept or a devil. I get it, they amplify her self-hatred when they make her aware of her height, but reading this is draining as a manlet.

congratulations you're getting a glimpse into how women see the world. the world is composed of three things
>"it just works" background material like inert matter and their university and the stores that automatically self-restock their favorite food

>other males, strange creatures that don't seem to know they aren't chad and thus are only inert matter to be trod upon or work in menial background roles

Esther was mentally ill that quote about the fig tree should be viewed in a similar context. Nothing was good enough for her, nothing would make her happy because she suffered from clinical depression.

It is not a personal attack on yourself or manlets it's a view in the mind of a woman suffering. Stop sexualising everything and making it about yourself you should be ashamed you read a book about the misery and depression of a struggling young woman and the only emotion you felt was anger at yourself and your own insecurities. Grow up.

Women can be mentally ill too. Esther is not a representation of a healthy normal person you shouldn't read The Bell Jar as a guide to the thoughts of women you fucking virgin.

We aren't dismissing the book because of manlet hate. We here at /lit/ hate manlets as well. We're dismissing this book because "clinical depression" is a spook. Esther's just a lazy bitch.

>> No.18810287

>>18809998
I don't know what you expected from the book then because you are not supposed to read it as a work of non-fiction. Trying to squeeze didactic message about morality out of a novel about a woman's experience with mental health is silly. The Bell Jar is semi-biographical and should be read as such; Plath was mentally ill herself writing a novel about a mentally ill woman so of course some of it is going to come off an immature and childish but such is the nature of mental illness. Plath was writing how depression distorts your perception of the world and changes how you interact with it and as a sane stable person you should look at Esther and think she is irrational and immature. Instead of criticising her and looking down on her for 'feminine vitriol' you are supposed to forgive and sympathise with her because she is suffering and trapped in a broken mind but obviously empathy for a privileged white woman is not something you would find on 4chan.

Literally the opening monologue from Richard III kek:

But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks,
Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;
I, that am rudely stamp'd, and want love's majesty
To strut before a wanton ambling nymph;
I, that am curtail'd of this fair proportion,
Cheated of feature by dissembling nature,
Deformed, unfinish'd, sent before my time
Into this breathing world, scarce half made up,
And that so lamely and unfashionable
That dogs bark at me as I halt by them;
Why, I, in this weak piping time of peace,
Have no delight to pass away the time,
Unless to spy my shadow in the sun
And descant on mine own deformity:
And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover,
To entertain these fair well-spoken days,
I am determined to prove a villain
And hate the idle pleasures of these days.
Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous,
By drunken prophecies, libels and dreams
