I read it without having any idea what it was about; all I'd heard was that it was an influence behind the OK bombings and that it was on one of the so called 'banned books', although for some reason it never turned up on the lists of banned books.
Reading it was great fun because of how insane got. It started as vaguely anti-government, but it just kept digging deeper and deeper into the hole. Once the California parts rolled around I had to laugh out loud.
I think one of the main reasons for my enjoying it so much is how little I knew of it beforehand. I don't think I can replicate the experience because if I end up reading a 'similar' book, I'll know what to expect.
If you go in with a sense of humour, it can be a fun light read.

We are arguing over two different forms of wage slavery. I think Pierce wanted people to have greater economic autonomy which is easiest to attain when people own land to grow their own food and generally need to acquire skills necessary to take care of their own wellbeing.

Pierce also advocated for small cities for those who want to live in them, but it would be very different from the ugly sprawling metropolises that we have today. Traditional urbanism provides a model for healthy high-density living while retaining human-friendly proportions.
