I've read and enjoyed a couple of these books "for what they are", e.g. God Touched is pretty awful in many ways but it's a female vampire romance with the vampire being a centuries old prostitute. I am also enjoying "the perfect Run" so far.
"Castle Kingside" is besides "The Twelve kingdoms" the only isekai I enjoyed and would recommend to other people.
But the two might not fit the list even when they are better than some titles i recognize.
Perhaps "Inheritors of Eschaton" would be a better candidate. Didn't like it as much, but alas, its popular for a reason.

also keep in mind that it depends on your age and interest in the books. when i was a kid i could read a whole harry potter novel, now i couldn't. when i read wot i was in my early 20s., probably wouldn't enjoy it as much now. but the books definitely have a lot of charm and if you're in the right time of your life, you might enjoy them. just keep what that other anons said in mind. be able to quit if something bores you. i still can't do it and i wasted over an year on malazan and thomas covenant, series that i disliked for like 80% of the time and don't remember nearly as fondly

Any books like Burroughs's "Cities of the Red Night?"

I have trouble putting it into words, but it feels so... authentic. Like it doesn't feel like an author made up a fantasy world or anaalternate universe. It doesn't feel like urban fantasy or magical realism even though it is all of them. It feels like this is a novel someone would write in a universe where all this is true.

Maybe you guys can help me. I’m into books with a heroic sort of element or character, but I’m not into sword and sorcery type fantasy. I don’t really have much interest in science or science fiction. YA is just a little too low brow. So where am I supposed to look for books? Modernism kind of killed the hero and so looking for contemporary books to read has left me totally lost.

I feel similarly, WOT is like a high school friend used to hang out with but drifted apart from. I don't regret the time, but I also wouldn't pursue it now or recommend to anyone over a certain age (25?). The first book is legitimately good though, it has a great sense of urgency/momentum maintained over many chapters, after that it just slows down more and more until you're trapped in a hell dimension of overly described dresses/frilly collars and bad dreams.

friends, I read The Golden Age by John C. Wright, I thought there were some excellent moments in it, and some really bold exploration of tropes taken to their most extreme conclusions..
Now I'm a quarter of the way into the sequel and I don't even give a quarter shit anymore... The whole thing with the possibility that he's being hunted by an unknown alien civ, versus the possibility that he just made it all up... it comes in at the last second in the book, and all of a sudden this is what the story is ~about~. That's not the book I thought I was reading, and I don't think it's the one I want to read..

Not really sure what's unclear about it. I like it when a series has a lot of books, because if I enjoy the series that means I get to spend more time reading it. If I don't enjoy it, whatever. The number of books in a series I'm not gonna read is irrelevant to me. I'm not one of those people that feels obligated to stick with a series after I start it, I only read something for as long as I want to. Thus, the length of a series is only a positive thing to me.

This is on top of the obvious Elayne, Morgase, Caemlyn/Camelot names. Any other cool references in these books, anons? There is, if you pay attention it becomes pretty obvious that the series is intended to be set on future earth, the age before the age of legends ended in a war between "Mosk and Merk" (Moscow and America) fought with lances of fire that reached the stars and destroyed entire cities (nukes).
Keep in mind the series began during the Cold War.

Hot damn. I knew the previous age was one of high technology, weird, but high tech because of the volkswagen beetles or whatever they were described as. I just thought the star description was of some weird magic metal but I suppose that's what plastic is. Question is, why is the One Power did in our world? Or is it? If Robert Jordan was writing based off of the present being the book's past, he is stating that the One Power must exist, of course. So why don't we see it? Is it because modern Whitecloaks won their war and the bloodlines that contain aptitude for magic are suppressed? What brings out that aptitude when our age ends? Is Robert Jordan a prophet? Does he have any freemason connections?

>Egwene didn't annoy me too much beyond "I'm sorry my love, I must be a bitch for now."
I just felt like she got so full of herself so quickly. She hardly seemed to suffer from the same kind of crisis of identity than Rand,Perrin, and Mat went through, coming to terms with their own importance and the burdens of ruling and leading. Egwene seemed eager to believe she was special and superior to others and relished her status.

I've heard some different ideas about why the far future premise was dropped. Some people seemed to think that Jordan got miffed that readers figured it out early and refused to go down that route because it had been spoiled. Jordan did that *repeatedly* with the series. Demandred being Taim, Graendal working with Demandred, and Olver being Gaidal just off the top of my head. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if Jordan dropped it purely because people figured it out.

Has anyone read from the novelizations of the Warhammer or World of Warcraft universe? I'm attracted to the aesthetics of the world (both in how they're very unforgiving shlock and how the characters were quote "designed by an erection"), but the one WoW book I looked seemed pretty bad. Is Warhammer better? Did I misjudge WoW books? Anyone have experience reading them?
