oh, hi /lit/

does anyone know any good secondary literature on Freud? to be specific- on his theory of psychosexual development.

in a conversation like this, usually Scientific critique and Feminist critique is brought up, but I'm looking for somthing special.

any help would be much appreciated.

>> No.1877374

Most of what Freud wrote is bullshit.

>> No.1877376

Freud may be the original but, most of his theories are outdated. Your better off reading something more current. It would be a bad idea to take a step backwards by reading his garbage. It wasn't garbage when he first came up with his ideas but it is now.

So is 99% of non-fiction, doesn't make it any less interesting.

Key word: most.

Psychosexual theory is a crock, but psychoanalysis is very useful in some contexts and is still employed today.

OP here.
I'm fully aware someone might call Freud out dated and, in many aspects, they would be true. which is why i'm looking for something "more current". what is it? I could really use some assistence.

>>1877384
For psychosexual? Nothing. It's been completely abandoned by mainstream psychology. Psychoanalysis is mainly used in treatment of certain psychopathologies, but it's almost never used in a theoretical/explanatory sense for any major portion of psychology.

Behaviorism is still "up to date"(it's falling out of popularity when not paired with cognitive) but is also a classic theory.

Freud isn't outdated we've simply gotten to the point where we know most of it is bullshit, like let's say astrology or phrenology.

I know- Oedipal conflict and the acceptance of gender role. but what about modren views on this?

>> No.1877432

>>1877407
The closest thing to "childhood sexuality" in modern psychological theory would probably be gender identity. If you're looking for, like, one theorist who dominates the field on it, you're barking up the wrong tree. Psychology doesn't really work that way anymore.

I honestly suggest getting access to a child psychology textbook and going from there. I still say the only thing you're going to find is gender identity, which can begin before a child is even a year old.

It's true, though. This is why Freud and Lacan would have been best friends, and why Lacan jerked off daily to Freud. Same kind of intellectual thievery.

Or because Freud was just taking ideas from literature (Shakespeare, Sophocles, Dostoevsky) and turning them into a sort of analytic philosophy.

Freud's philosophy was also garbage from a philosophical standpoint. So I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

Glad to see I made the right choice in dismissing him, then. Freud can remain the figure of fanboy worship for autistic males with superiority complexes.

>> No.1877634

Well OP, you could dig stuff up about anthropologic discoveries reforming the Oedipus Complex - it has been found that (I know, it might sounds obvious) that parental figures are more important (is it an uncle, an older brother, a neighboor) in the Complex. Not the father necessarily or the mother.

We can then conclude that the genetic factors (concerning the parental influences in the Oedipus Complex) might be less important. Your dad and your mom, in the latent age, are more important than your conceivers.

great suggestion. thanks. might help.

OP, I know a lot of people in this thread are calling out Freud to be bullshit, and I'm not saying he is or he isn't, but make sure you read some of his works before making that call yourself. I don't really have much to recommend you, but Civilization and its Discontents might be a place to start, if you haven't read it already.

I didn't take it as an insult

meh, I called you a dick, you made a clever retort relating to penis envy. I think that's about where it ends, I find you obnoxious, but my emotional investment in the statement is relatively meager... and from what I've seen of you, your emotional investment in what other people have to say is non-existent.

So I don't think there is any more to be gained from this line of communication, although I did get a chuckle from your retort.

Good day sir.

Interpretation of Dreams is really cool. It has a really straightforward style and the guy was pretty humble for a cocaine addict. For current psychoanalysis you would have to read Lacan, who is obscure and anti-intuitive and full of himself like most of the 20th century french fuckers but Foucault, who was a pretty cool guy and doesn't afraid of anything.
