Holy shit this guy is the epitome of "*refuses to elaborate further*"

Ah yes, the Socratic method, famous for having been built on a foundation of out-and-out explanations of a position

Not really, wouldn't consider myself one.

I did. Same thing. No further elaboration.

His dialogues are like commercials for the Academy. No shit you're not getting his actual teachings for free. Or ever, for that matter, unless you try to piece it together from Plotinus.

>he hasn't read the middle and late dialogues
The early dialogues are all intended to end without resolution.

Never knew whether that guy meant if one is reading plato they arent an intellectual because plato should be nearer the start of ones reading or if he simply meant reading plato at all is for brainlets. If he meant the latter than i would have liked to know what this self proclaimed intellectual considers a ‘true’ intellectual’s philosopher.

Best Plotinus to begin with?

Because it's main purpose is to be a filter. Plato isn't the only one who does this. Hell even uncle Nabby mastered the art of "refuses to elaborate further" while making it seems like elaborating.

>what this self proclaimed intellectual considers a ‘true’ intellectual’s philosopher.
Yes, it was the later. He attained true enlightenment and realized that true philosophers only read their own work.

Probably because it was left as an exercise to the reader. Philosophy is an active endeavor, you won't learn it by simply reading and watching other people do it in front of you.

Is this one the one you're talking about? seems to be a good deal of plotinus in amazon, I'll check the strand when I get a change too.

Kinda confusing idk why I get the sense that Parm is just a big troll gatekeeper.

>> No.18770721

I still don't understand the second part myself but it's the epitome of your refuse to elaborate point. I'm not even sure there's anything there.

>> No.18770768

>>18770721
Exactly my thoughts. I feel like more than refusing to elaborate there's major gatekeeping going here. The whole dialogue is like one of those youtube ads where they want to share with you this ONE CRAZY SECRET to get women or to lose weight or whatever and then you realize that at the end of the video is just a page where you have to subscribe to some e-lecture from a guy talking out of his ass but at that point you can't get your money back. I feel like that's the message of the lecture itself and Socrates is well aware of that, he merely acts as an observer of the trolling, amused.
