The Road to Oxiana by Robert Byron

>> No.18766659

I have read Zen in the Art of Archery (while living and teaching philosophy abroad in Japan, a German professor begins studying Zen Buddhism and archery), Ulysses Found (Royal Navy officer travels around Greece tracing Odysseus's steps), some of Marco Polo's travels, and some of Lawrence of Arabia's Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Travelogues are one of my favorite genres.

Have also read Herodotus, though a long time ago and its escaped my mind that it is indeed a travelogue (among so many other things though).

>The writer Paul Fussell wrote[2] that The Road to Oxiana is to the travel book what "Ulysses is to the novel between the wars, and what The Waste Land is to poetry."

whoa this seems promising, definitely adding to my to-read list

Oh yes, was going to say, wasn't there an anon who recently translated some book about a Japanese man coming to Italy?

Also wanted to say that I like travelogues because I enjoying seeing the contrast of philosophical understanding and wisdom between two cultures. (Zen in the Art of Archery and Seven Pillars of Wisdom are rife with this kind of stuff)

For a book some of you might actually read Micheal Palin wrote Erebus: The Story of a Ship which was really good and compelling.

>> No.18767194

Pausanias is a good read, pretty much the best you'll get for a description of 2nd century Greece.
Anyone have suggestions on the most lively descriptions of Baghdad in the golden age?

>nonfiction
I like it but it makes Herodotus look scientific. At least it's better than Ibn Battuta where it's straight up fantasy.
