I'm yet to finish it. the protagonist is a bit too edgy for my liking but otherwise it's quite gripping.

I was reading this book on a plane and my mom looked over my shoulder and said "that book is pretty badly written, isn't it?" and then I stopped reading it.

Honestly it's really good. I haven't read any other of Watts books but i'm really enjoying this one. Very very claustrophobic as well as tense. I did my bachelors in Marine Biology so the setting has me diamonds.

the other poster says Watts is quite try hard and that is what i was fearing going into Starfish but it feel far from it to be honest. plausible science that isn't too obnoxious with certain aspects being closer to near future technology than entirely science fiction.

when i said that "hes a tryhard" i wasn't talking about his science knowledge, but a tryhard in the way he constructs plots (since Watts is far away from being an interesting person himself, not to say that he lacks the experience and knowledge about exciting and thrilling stuff, his plots are very boring and nerdy, and cringy and edgy).

Pulp usually tries to be entertaining, hard sci fi is more like trying to read an actual tree

I liked Blindsight a lot more. Starfish is good, a lot more accessible than Blindsight because it doesn't have as much technical details.

Ah, thanks for the clarification.
