There is a massive difference in notes between English language books and Swedish language books. Usually there are really no notes at all in Swedish releases, except for the authors own notes and when the author quoted some Latin or something. I wonder if it is the same in other languages.

English editions are fucking nuts though, there are notes for everything, from cities to mini bios for every fucking historical person/reference.

Partially it is a way to make printing more efficient, if the publisher prints a great deal of books in the 250 page range they can save money by working books into that range so it can use all the same setup for press and binding, it can actually be cheaper to print a 250 page book than a 150 page book. This is why some book have a dozen blank pages at the beginning and end or pages of praise at the beginning and lists of other books by the publisher at the end and why page formatting and.font size is not constant. And partially it is just business, new and updated content to get sales.

Spanish ---from Spain--- translations usually have a lot of notes, and most of them are worthless because of their obvious and tautological content. But latam made spanish translations have notes that most of the time are contextual and regarding.
