Reaction against Pessimism, there are historical antecedents but in the modern West it begins with Schopenhauer and Hartmann.

The reaction against pessimism begins with Nietzsche and Ludwig Klages Lebensphilosophie.

Are there any good death-affirming books?

>> No.18759556

life affirming is my least favorite descriptor for stuff. I usually see it used for music on like RYM or something, and its always about how some 20 minute Swans song is "life affirming". I think they use it instead of saying epic or something

yeah, I hate all this blurb-speak shit. I use to avoid any movies where trailers described them as 'sexy,' or an actor's performance as a 'tour-de-force,' but now I just don't watch movies altogether

Start with that book by Beiser to get an introduction to it. Nietzsche is a field onto himself, but The Gay Science is good primary lit. For Klags there isn't much choice in English but I can recommend Paul Bishop.

"Of Human Bondage" by W. Somerset Maugham is the original "life affirming" book and i don't mean that in a cringey way.
Based on the author's own life it tells the story of a young man's struggle to find his place in the world. He experiences poverty, loneliness and dissapointments but eventually gets his "sort of" happy ever after.
You should read it.

>The fundamental fact of the Hellenic instinct—its ‘will to life’—expresses itself only in the Dionysian mysteries, in the psychology of the Dionysian state. What did the Hellenes guarantee for themselves with these mysteries? Eternal life, the eternal recurrence of life; the future promised and consecrated in the past; the triumphant Yes to life beyond death and change; true life as collective continuation of life through procreation, through the mysteries of sexuality.

That's a vastly simplified take.
It's about the struggle to make something of one's life. The struggle to carve out your own slice of happiness. The search for meaning in it all. The reckless indulgence of appetites and desires and the effect this indulgence has on your life.
It's fucking layers deep man.
Read it.

Yes. I think that anon confused it with The Razor's Edge. One is about the danger of being used by women, the other is about life affirmation. Both good books.

Ya I don’t understand why people have a problem with this phrase. It just means that it inspires you to recognize and generate beauty in your life. It’s an overused phrase but the core theme is good.

Yes. So much modern media is completely cynical whether that be in content or intent. To find something that actually uplifts or inspires you in a way that remains with you long after you close the book (or finish the movie or whatever) is pretty rare these days.
