My dad's an old marxist and really wants to discuss Marx and marxist theory with me. He wants me to read all of Marx' works, including all the footnotes to Capital.

Problem is, I'm currently studying for my law degree (and so am already reading a lot), but I do want to have a good, comfy debate with my old man about the stuff that interests him and that he knows a lot about. Are there any smaller books of Marx' or on marxist theory that are accessible without too needing too much external input or knowledge of other works, and can form the basis for an interesting discussion? Just want to make my dad happy, he has nobody else to discuss these things with, and I might even learn a thing or two.

Read the 1844 manuscripts and watch this: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWvnUfModHP9Ci8M1g39l4AZgK6YLCXd0
^(it's a bit big so, if you want to you can buy Capital with "A guide to Marx's capital - Anthony Brewer".)
Alternatively, if you really want to get the basics now, and learn more later on, get Sowell's Marxism. He lays it all out and gives his critique only at the end. Pretty good book.
But in all sincerity, you have to know a bit (alot) of German Idealism beforehand. Good luck, Marx isn't the end of all, but he has inspired both Left (almost all of it) and Right (fascism and de Benoist comes to mind).
Good luck to you and your dad

Forgot to add, if you're taking a Law degree, then definitely get Sowell's Marxism (or read it online)

No, but I'll get to him eventually. Right now I'm still in the middle of reading Plato. Do you think I can jump straight to them after the greeks?

Begin with the late Romans, including Boethius, of course. Then you should dip rather extensively into early Medieval. You may skip the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. That is mostly dangerous propaganda. Now that I think of it, you had better skip the Romantics and the Victorians, too. For the contemporary period, you should study some selected comic books. I recommend Batman especially, for he tends to transcend the abysmal society in which he's found himself. His morality is rather rigid, also. I rather respect Batman.

Or if you want something simpler just read Bronze Age Mindset and then put your father to the sword.
