The Iliad and The Odyssey explode with symbolic meaning. Every scene, from Agamemnon's confiscation of Achilles' girl to Odysseus' encounter with Polyphemus and so on, overflows with universal relevance--the description of Achilles' shield alone contains the entire cosmos!--and all of them together have produced our massive Western Canon, the bulk of which is merely a commentary on these unsurpassed literary achievements. However, what am I supposed to do with all of this meaning? I will never fight a river-god, nor will I be tempted with seven years of sex by an immortal goddess. How do I incorporate this meaning into my life? Is there a way to live heroically in a banal, virtually meaningless world?

My thinking is that if you can’t be the hero, you should create the hero.

Start thinking in Greek
Become a bard and start singing the Homeric songs whenever you feel like it
Memorise it all

You won't if you don't believe in the Gods and devote your life to them
