I knew he was a basedboy (just look at the fair essay and how he whitekinights the girl) but that's too much. I really like Infinite Jest and his short stories, so I'll guess his debut novel is just faggotry from his youth.

It is almost as bad. The Broom of the System and Girl With the Curious Hair are not exactly good, they are kind of fun and have some impressive moments but that is about it. He reaches too far, lacks focus and direction, and is mostly imitating his heroes (mostly Pynchon). What I find most impressive about his early works is how much his voice comes through despite the lack of cohesive style and voice, he took a long hard look at these early works and built what became his style around them, stripped out everything that was not himself and then filled in the holes. A thorough study of Broom of the System and Infinite Jest was one of the most informative things I have done, taught me how to develop my own voice and style.

As an aside, most of the memes and bait made by people who never read Infinite Jest are actually about Broom of the System and apply almost 100%. Thankfully he learned a great deal in that decade between them.
