This one's pretty good if you like idyllic settings and references to old folk tales and mythology. It's never been translated, but I guess you should be able to enjoy it even if you're forced to read a machine translated version of it.

This one's great too even if you don't know about Impressionism or Kierkegaard's leap of faith. It's been translated to several languages, none of which is English.

The House in Fata Morgana. The soundtrack and artstyle are top tier as well.

The best VNs are as good as genre fiction and the worst as bad as fanfiction.
Besides, almost all VNs suffer from ungodly amounts of padding and a severe lack of editing. You can justify some of it as 'building character' or 'establish relationships' or 'the setting', but the fact is that VNs are generally poorly paced with long dull sections that would be drastically them in half, or even to a quarter of their original sizes. Here are some of the VNs I've read that I would recommend with some precaution.
Umineko suffers greatly from the lack of editing and poor pacing as well as from excessive length (it is as long as two-and-a-half Bibles), but it is on par with some of the best murder mystery novels, and has many innovative and metatextual elements.
I liked Grisaia, but it is 'merely' fun and has no literary merit. It is a good VN, but nothing more.
Mahouyo is more 'professional' than Type-Moon's earlier Tsukihime, in both writing and assets, but the earlier work, while amateurish, has more substance yet still far less than, for example, Heinlein. Fate/Stay Night is on par with the Percy Jackson series in terms of depth.
Nitroplus VNs are interesting, so I'll say a few words on the ones I've read. I found Sumaga very moving, but I can't claim it has much depth beyond sentimental value. Saya no Uta is a 'lovecraftian' horror VN and, atypically for the medium, has very good pacing. I would say that its merits exceed Lovecraft's stories if we do not consider his influence. Chaos;Head is an interestingly portrayal of a NEET, which is not too common in either VNs nor literature. Unfortunately, outside the this and some horror elements the story is quite bad, especially towards the end. Steins;Gate is a fairly well done time travel story with some fun characters, but with zero depth. Flying Shine's Cross Channel and Propeller's Asairo are VNs that do this sort of thing with an actual purpose. It must be admitted that these latter two are not SF, but unless you are interested in long pseudoscientif explanations on how black holes created in microwave ovens make time travel possible, this should not be a limitation.

As much as I hate reddit and am skeptical of Western takes on Japanese culture mediums, I think the West has produced several good VNs including DDLC, which is effective at horror and has attractive character designs without any diversity politics embedded in it. Cripple Girls game and Unteralterbach similarly stand out as above average.

Thanks for saying this so I didn't have to, it's annoying how popular it is in the west when seemingly nobody goes on to play Japanese VNs (which are better) once they're finished with it, even if they loved it. I liked DDLC it's just not as good as the attention it got compared to others.

>most western vns are so ironic and try to subvert so much you have to ask why people even make and read them if they hate vns so much

I made a VN that was literally a love letter to the medium, but it didn't get popular at all. I hate VNs like DDLC, where it is clear the Dev has nothing but contempt for the medium. I genuinely love this medium, and would like to see it reach its potential (visuals + audio + prose based narrative is a great combination when people know what to do with it).

Picrelated is my VN for those curious

If anything, novels are a dead medium given then nobody reads books anymore. On the other hand visual novels have much higher potential to appeal to people addicted to screen based stimulation.

Novels are a dying medium, but as a result of being so old have the best content. Visual novels are a superior medium, but as a result of being so young, have inferior content for now

You would be seething as well if the most popular work in your favorite medium was some poorly put together work that subverts the medium. Only confirming the already negative preconceived notion most people already have of said medium.

>and I feel like it warrants my time to point it out.

You're probably right that it's not good to stew in this negativity. And assuming you are being genuine, I'll respond back to you in a genuine way. I'm just not sure what to do other than just try to focus my efforts on making another VN. Focusing my energy on something positive (making something) I think is constructive. But it feels Sisyphean when I know it probably won't result in anything. I'll do it anyway, because I feel oddly driven to do this, but another failure could easily result in more "bottled up resentment" as you put it

Isolated in a room repurposed into a personal shrine to esoteric Japanese media. Our nameless protagonist has dedicated himself to a collection of retro Japanese computer games, with a particular fondness for early visual novels. Although decaying in a slovenly existence to the untrained eye, his retreat into digital life is enriched by the scripted interactions with various charming 2D girls. His one purpose in life is to chronicle his thoughts and reflections on each of the digital worlds he immerses himself in. However, one day while pulling out another visual novel to review, a girl leaps straight out of the cover art and begins interacting with him, face to face. But perhaps most shocking of all, in a completely unscripted manner.
