THE SLOG OF SLOGS, BOYS!

NO SHITPOSTING ON THE SLOG!

>> No.18704443

The Darkness That Comes Before does suffer somewhat from that common condition in Fantasy lit of Book 1 mostly serving to position and bring characters together in to the groupings required for the meat of the narrative to progress at a faster clip in the next book while simultaneously keeping its cards close to its chest with regard to the more interesting elements of the setting.
The net result is a book where not a lot happens and even less is explained. All you really have is internal snapshots of various characters reminiscing on things that had happened to them before the book even began. This is, of course necessary, and handled fairly well, but there isn't a lot else so it can get tedious.

I long ago accepted that the art of writing a compelling first book has been lost to Fantasy authors and so I tend to reserve my judgment until the second book. Thankfully these books are averaging at around 400 pages, less than half the length of many Epic Fantasy books, so it was no great effort to make it to The Warrior-Prophet. And I am glad that I did. With all the narrative and character pieces in place the story really gets going, and we actually get to learn things about that world which are more substantial that give context to the immediate narrative and makes everything more interesting. The characters too shine far more when enmeshed in each other's drama rather than as mostly isolated entities converging toward the same point like in Book 1.

I am a few chapters off of finishing Book 3 and I feel immensely satisfied at this point, although I can't speak to the quality of the next series, and I am probably going to read some other stuff before returning to this world.

Thank you for reading my blog.

Got about 100 pages in before giving up. Boring premise and dull characters aside, the dude is the most writery writer ever. He's the kinda guy who can't help but use 'iridescent' instead of 'shiny'.

I'm gonna be honest, I got drawn into this series because of the high effort Pepes and Wojaks and got what I deserved. It is not written well. I don't read fantasy or genre fiction in general either.
