Idolatry usually means believing that your god actually inhabits its depiction, Christians are usually fine with representations of deity as long as they are regarded as just representations. Of course it's a blurry distinction especially when people seek healing from these depictions or perform folk ceremonies like burying a saint statue for good luck.

>Of course anyone who is familiar with the context will know that this is a provision against the Israelites’ tendency to make idols of graven images. A “graven” or man-made image which serves a good and holy purpose are not absolutely forbidden; and this is made clear only five chapters later when God commands Moses to make two gold statues of angels for the Ark of the Covenant (Ex 25:18-20). The bronze serpent hoisted by Moses is another Old Testament example of a holy image used for God’s purposes (see Numbers 21).

The cross is the image by which man is given again Life, and the ability to be with God, like God. It is the image by which Christ trampled by death and freed us from its chains. The cross is a weapon against demons and sin. The apostles taught us to cross ourselves. Look at all of the “apostolic Churches,” even ones that aren’t Orthodox. They all cross themselves. So yes, the Church decided it is good for us as Christians and our children to wear this image discreetly, to remind us of the cost paid for us to wake up, and who we are to emulate.

>By the way what does the Bible say about relics? Like bones of saints. They're a big deal in Catholic Europe. Does the Bible even hint that people should be made into saints?

Scripture teaches that God acts through relics, especially in terms of healing. In fact, when surveying what Scripture has to say about sacred relics, one is left with the idea that healing is what relics “do.”

When the corpse of a man was touched to the bones of the prophet Elisha the man came back to life and rose to his feet (2 Kings 13:20-21).

A woman was healed of her hemorrhage simply by touching the hem of Jesus’ cloak (Matthew 9:20-22).

The signs and wonders worked by the Apostles were so great that people would line the streets with the sick so that when Peter walked by at least his shadow might ‘touch’ them (Acts 5:12-15).

When handkerchiefs or aprons that had been touched to Paul were applied to the sick, the people were healed and evil spirits were driven out of them (Acts 19:11-12).

In each of these instances God has brought about a healing using a material object. The vehicle for the healing was the touching of that object. It is very important to note, however, that the cause of the healing is God; the relics are a means through which He acts. In other words, relics are not magic. They do not contain a power that is their own; a power separate from God.

Very rarely do I encounter a trend which utterly baffles me, but this shirt thing does.

When I think of what these shirts claim to represent versus what they actually are, the inherent contradiction seems obvious to me and I would feel foolish wearing one. Regardless of whatever traits are referenced (astrology, vocation, whatever) and what they apparently signal (strong, loyal, insane, whatever), the message is always "I am a member of an elite class which is superior to everyone reading this" but since these groups must be statistically significant in order to justify the financial risk of mass production, it's obvious that the person wearing one must not be as special as they imagine and since they don't recognize that, the elite group to which they claim to belong must obviously not be an intelligent one. The claims made aren't bombastic enough to qualify as ironic or humorously absurd, therefore I believe they are meant to be taken at face value. I haven't arrived at these conclusions by logical thought, it was pure instinct which has been extremely difficult to put into clear language. Meaning this is not a simple matter of having thought more than the average person, I felt how stupid they were the moment I saw the first one. No intelligence involved, so I can't fall back on the "people who do this are stupid" defense which might explain something like the tide pod challenge.

Can anyone explain this? Does anyone know anyone who actually has one of these shirts?

On second thought, I do recall working with a guy who wore one of these, except it went like "Nobody's perfect, but if your name is John you might be close" name has been changed but that's the idea it conveyed.

Like you'd imagine, he was profoundly stupid, but I'd say his defining trait was extreme timidity. He fidgeted constantly, tended to avoid eye contact, and would begin stuttering/backpedaling in the middle of a conversation if you showed the slightest sign of disagreeing with him. He tried to joke with people but didn't seem to clearly understand how jokes worked, instead believing that simple bragging was funny. So you'd say, for instance, that the weather had been cool lately and he'd smirk and say "Cool lately? Are you talking about me?" and when no one laughed he'd look down at the ground and stutter out an explanation. On top of that, he had a tendency to "subtly" bring up the fact that he had served prison time for selling meth, like he'd pick up a chunk of ice (we skinned fish at work) and tell you much it would be worth if it was meth, but eventually he stopped because someone else started telling him that if he had something to say he needed to say it and not just hint around and hope someone would ask, and then went on to point out that meth isn't a cool drug like cocaine and he should be ashamed of himself. I'm not going to connect his personality with the type of shirts he liked to wear, he just pissed me off and I wanted to complain about it.

It's impossible to like someone who's only desire in life is to impress everyone he meets and you can't have decent banter with a guy who always changes his opinions to match yours. He sucked the wind out of every conversation he was in by making cringing, servile attempts to place himself at the top of our social hierarchy. It was like he was constantly trying to "one-up" everyone in the wrong direction. Like one time my apron slipped while I was dumping some fish guts and I got pissed because I spilled fish guts down the front of my pants and he pompously stated that he wears the same pants for four days in a row or something. And then I said that was nasty and he looked down at the ground and start making excuses for something he'd just got done bragging about. He desperately wanted you to be jealous of everything he did, and on the rare occasion he said something genuinely funny and got a laugh, you could be certain he'd be repeating it for hours afterwards.

We know that using religious symbols for prayer does not violate the Commandments. Moses and the Hebrews looked to the Nehushtan while they prayed for healing. They carried the Ark of the Covenant into battles, bowed before it, made it the centerpiece of their religious ceremonies, and kept it veiled when not in use. Much like how pagan tribes would treat idols. Since Moses, who received the Commandments against idolatry directly and punished the practice amongst the Hebrews, could do this without sining, we can assume there is a difference between idolatry and reverence towards religious symbols.
