Paperbacks are honesty more durable than hardback, the spines in 90% of hardback are shit cardboard and will get fucked when water damaged and slight rips in the dust sleeves are just sad, damage on paperback mostly just adds character.
You could take the library pill and try wrapping it in clear sticky plastic film
