Speaking of derivative work---either I'm viewing current material that's not yet been sieved by time, or there's just more trash.
If you apply a Gaussian distribution to a population with prerequisites like literacy (although people'd also had others to dictate to in the past) and you'd get a number of people that can churn out shit like it's nobody's business. Relatively shit---one man's trash is another's blah, etc.; or objectively so, depending on their various shared metrics, that all fall somewhere on a distribution.
Give it 20--50 years, and you'll be looking back with hindsight/memory bias, reexperiencing the good books and ignorant of all the shit you've dropped. Anybody speaking of the period, will likely speak of the worthwhile expamle having passed the filter the time.

I'd check out Sunless Sea also. Dirt cheap and can run on any computer. Has a pretty good somber tone and nice nautical existential horror that doesn't rely on Cthulu-mythos.
It's follow up Sunless Skies is better put together, but is a little trippier and I think relies on the weird factor more to impress the player than the straightforward creativity the first had.
