How can you even discuss genre fiction?
>muh feasting
>muh magic
>muh dragons
>muh swords
>muh quest
>muh worldbuilding

>I like this character more than this character
>fuck you, this character is fucking stupid, this one is clearly better
>the magic system is retarded, this author can't make a good one
>the worldbuilding is shallow in book X, picks up in book Y
>no the world building in book X was better because of [element], ever since they dumped it it has been shit
>why would you include the elves in this part for fucks sake
>the entire book is ripping off 3 other works, just look at the archetypes

I'm reading Dune right now, enjoying it so far. The themes so far are mainly destiny, power and esotericism.
This board tends to dismiss "genre fiction" entirely in a way I haven't encountered elsewhere. I assume it's a way to build pseud credentials. Even when I was doing philology courses at university there wasn't anywhere near this level of snobbery. There's a lot of badly written inane crap as well of course, but that's true for 19th century social realism or whatever is considered true intellectualism here.

Every time I see a little bit of the sci-fi/fantasy general, they're just complaining about how much cuckoldry there is in every book they read.

Modern literary fiction is degenerated trash written by empty headed hacks. It's endlessly repetitive after the greats. It seeks after the grotesque and subversive. Not once has such a mode produced high art. It's really no different from derivative genre fiction.

The youtube algorithm played me a video on fantasy books and the guy started talking about his criteria for a good fantasy series is the “magic system” and I almost wanted to puke.
How could anyone stand to read slightly different rehashes of the same shit over and over again?

How can you discuss fiction lit in general. Right now I'm reading Past and Present, and I can discuss the message Carlyle wants to deliver, I guess also the delivery itself(you may dislike the guy but his prose is superb), but how can I discuss let's say Master and Margarita, a novel I remember enjoying but I could easily summarise its content, and this will apply to lots of other more fine literature as:
>muh references
>muh social allegories
>muh criticism of society
>muh self expression of the writer
