Advance Wars is a turn based strategy game. In it, you take control of a commanding officer of an army. Since it's a Nintendo game, the atmosphere is light and a lot of the officers are children. The game never mentions that they're child soldiers responsible for sending hundreds of men to their deaths. This is what the comic seems to be lampooning.

Dispatches by Michael Herr is a good book on the Vietnam War. Books on World War 2 are limitless. Ernst Jünger has more than a handful of writings on his time in the trenches of World War 1. All Quiet on the Western Front also draws from experience in World War 1. Clausewitz wrote on the Napoleonic Wars in On War. Thucydides wrote The History of the Peloponnesian War. William T Vollmann wrote an enormous essay called Rising Up and Rising Down, which deals with the subjects of war and violence broadly.
