Post pictures and talk about your typewriters. I just got a new electric typewriter and it's so useful. I don't know why people say typewriters are obsolete. If you need to write something on actual paper it's way more efficient than writing with your hand. I prefer writing notes with actual paper so it's great

Redpill me on typewriters, because as it stands I see them as
>heavier than a laptop
>harder to edit text than on a laptop
>more expensive as far as maintenance, paper, and ink go than a laptop
>if you use it in class, it's more likely to be a nuisance to others and could get you kicked out of the classroom
and they don't even boast the improvements to memorization that you get from writing something by hand.
I'll admit they're aesthetically pleasing machines and I'd love one for the novelty, but I can't understand their benefit for anything aside from sending letters.

For one like I said in the OP. If you prefer writing on real paper it's way more efficient than using your hand. I can type 160 wpm on a typewriter you can't even get close with your hand. I have stacks and stacks of typed up papers and notes over my room which is great. To have something you can actually hold in your hand instead of a bunch of text files in a hard drive. Don't need to worry about backups either. Other than that it's way more enjoyable to type. Typing a novel on a computer feels cold and sterile but on a typewriter it feels like you are actually creating something. There is no maintenance except buying a ribbon every few years which is extremely cheap and takes less than 10 seconds to put in. You can get them for $20 at local thrift stores.

I meant you can get a typewriter for $20 at a thrift store. Realize that looks weird. Ribbons are like $5 on amazon

I didn't realize that a ribbon of ink would last ~2 years of regular typing, you've got my curiosity now, especially as I don't think it would particularly offend me or my finances to have to retype a few, important papers, more than once as part of the revising process. Can they handle regular printer paper?

Yup. I use printer paper and index cards. The decision you have to make is between electronic and mechanical typewriters. I use mainly an electronic one because it's easier. Electronic ones allow you to type faster and they have modern features like moving automatically to the next line and being able to move around the paper like a wordpad on a laptop. It also has shit like self correct which takes the ink off the paper like a backspace. This is much better for serious work but typewriter purists hate it because it's not like a real manual typewriter where it's harder to type and you manually have to move to the next line. Manuals are more fun but way less efficient and much harder to type on. or you can just buy both like I did because it's so cheap

Wait a fucking minute, what kind of technological sorcery lets it remove the ink from the page?
I'm more interested in a manual, but if an electronic would let me not be as concerned about spelling errors/typos, then I might have to look for an electric instead

It's a piece of tape that slams it self onto the page and rips of the ink. Literally can't tell that ink has been there and doesn't damage the paper at all.

I just have it so I don't sit in front of a computer all day long. I can't look at screens anymore.

Typerwriter fag here. I originally bought mine just to kind of get in that "old writer" groove with the cigar and bourbon and whatnot. Found out they're fun and great machines. Very useful in the digital age, but even I have to admit it's more the novelty than anything at this point. Pic related, my Torpedo 18 which I use.

Someone recommend me a good typewriter, as small and cheap as possible. I'm type-curious.
