I read The Beach a while ago expecting it to be poor, but it was an excellent book, all things considered.

But is there much more to modern travel literature?

Geoff Dyer writes interesting travel literature, particularly if you're interested in the "Around the world on pills" school of writing.

Non-fictionally speaking, Tim Cahill writes interesting travel books - Pecked to Death by Ducks and A Wolverine is Eating My Leg are both interesting reads.

I enjoyed the beach. The book was so much better than the film. Well, till the ending. When they all get crazy on weed and try to stab him to death, that shit was just asbsurd.
I loved the whole crazy with Daffy.

But as for your question, I really can't help you. Sorry.

Oh, I forgot it was just weed. It would have been better if it was some weird hallucinagen. Everyone would have just fallen asleep on weed.

Good book though. Enjoyable. Great intro.

I'm surprised by the lack of pretentiousness in this thread.
