My brain starts shutting down after 40 minutes of reading and I begin losing comprehension.

Read in 40 minute intervals with a short break in between, or find reading material that interests you more. I could read novels all day long when I was younger but nowadays they bore me to death. Maybe the book just isn't your thing.

Have multiple books of different kinds on the go. Switch when you start losing focus on one. Failing that, you know, get sufficient sleep, keep hydrated etc.

stop reading. go do something else and let the matter advance itself in your mind, when you recognize new questions about what you're reading go back and read more.

I can read for an hour before I start difting in attention, unless of course im gripped by the book. I usually just go do something else like work out, practice music, etc. Then when I get bored I'll come back and read some more.

Your pepe has the answer. Just keep stretching your attention span like that and you'll be able to read for longer periods eventually. I reccomend picking up short stories. They're just like. Short stories so you feel like you ought to read them in one sitting, but it's pretty typical for em to be like an hour or an hour and a half read. I love Fred Barthelme's stories.
