what a fucking hipster

>> No.18581671

he was right though, Dante knew this

Dante know what? He defended his own Tuscan language over Provenzal.

Any regional poetry has undeniable charm over "mainstream" poetry even if it is a bit hipster

Provenzal was mainstream in its day retard

A few nobles and a few outcasts whose works were mainly compiled exclusively for other nobles at their request, and then buried in monasteries for 300 years. Real blockbusters.

>> No.18583516

>>18583336
Yes it was. Romance languages weren't as divergent as they are now. Provenzal poets were highly influential and if you spoke your own language, you practically knew Provenzal, akin to the marginal difference between European and Brazilian Portuguese.

No, he's right. Provençal poetry was mainstream in its day.

By who?
>>18583511
There is something called the Golden Age of Occitan literarature which is basically just poetry, so yes, it was pretty popular and influential.

>> No.18583557

>>18583516

If it's not obscure then Pound wasn't a hipster

>>18581705

He meant Dante, like many Itlain poets, adopted forms introduced to them through Provencal poets (ballade, canso) and were inspired to write in vernacular at all (rather than a particular vernacular.)

>> No.18583559

This has become a popular topic because of BAP mentioning it a month ago hasnt it?

Anyway, are there any good collections of provenzal poetry translated to english or do I unironcially have to learn french, then learn a dialect of french?

>> No.18583562

>>18583376

It was mainstream in the 1100s, 1200s and early 1300s. All the way from Santiago de Compostela to Rome you had people singing in Occitan.

>> No.18583563

>>18583557
There is a difference between the present and the past. Provençal poetry was popular in its day but today it's pretty hipsterish to be into it. I believe only specialists study it.

>This has become a popular topic because of BAP mentioning it a month ago hasnt it?
What? No, I have never read any meme book by twitter authors. I was reading Pound's ABC of Reading and he can't shut up about Provenzal poetry.

>> No.18583583

>>18583568
Oh fair, BAP mentioned (so I hear, I'm not a fan) provenzal poetry as some kind of civilisation high water mark the other day and I've seen more interest of /lit/ since then. I'm probably just seeing it more now I've been made aware of the trend.

Dante was inspired to write in his own language as a reaction against Occitan poetry's popularity in Italy.

Farai un vers de dreyt nien :
Non er de mi ni d’autra gen,
Non er d’amor ni de joven,
Ni de ren au,
Qu’enans fo trobatz en durmen
Sobre chevau.

No sai en quai hora.m fuy natz :
No suy alegres ni iratz,
No suy estrayns ni sui privatz,
Ni no.n puesc au,
Qu’enaissi fuy de nueitz fadatz,
Sobr’ un pueg au.

No sai qu’ora.m suy endurmitz
Ni quora.m velh, s’om no m’o ditz.
Per pauc no m’es lo cor partitz
D’un dol corau ;
E no m’o pretz una soritz
Pei sanh Marsau !

Malautz suy e cre mi murir,
E ren no.n sai mas quan n’aug dir :
Metge querrai al mieu albir,
E no sai cau ;
Bos metges er si.m pot guérir,
Mas non, si amau.

Amigu’ ai ieu, no sai qui s’es,
Qu’anc non la vi, si m’ajut fes ;
Ni.m fes que.m plassa ni que.m pes,
Ni no m’en eau,
Qu’anc non ac Norman ni Frances
Dins mon ostau.

Anc non la vi et am la fort,
Anc no n’aic dreyt ni no.m fes tort ;
Quan non la vey, be m’en déport,
No.m pretz un jau,
Qu’ie.n sai gensor e bellazor,
E que mais vau.

Fag’ai lo vers, no say de cuy ;
E trametrai lo a selhuy
Que lo.m trametra per autruy
Lay ves Anjau,
Que.m tramezes del sieu estuy
La contraclau.
