What's your favourite novel you've read and why?

Under the Volcano.
It felt dense with allusion and meaning which combined well with the haziness of the style to create a feeling of being drunk while reading; not fully realising but there's enough to grasp at. The emotion in the book felt astoundingly real, Lowry really knows how to write pain as pain under the surface and, again, the haziness of the writing adds to the feeling of hurt-in-confusion. Absolutely beautiful book which I plan on rereading once I've read Faust, as I think it will help with much of the allusion I missed the first time - I only hope this doesn't break the spell of the book for me.
