Stage it!

is this the thread for posting headcanon stagings of shakespeare plays? i kinda want to convince the local shakespeare in the park people let me direct the merchant of venice. my favorite idea is that Lorenzo is marrying Jessica solely for her money, and everyone in the friend group is still uncomfortable about being around a jewess. so every time she delivers a line, there'd be an uncomfortable pause before they continue as though she hadn't spoken

I also want to have Shylock spend most scenes acting like a hyper-jewish stereotype, but reveal through moments of sincerity that this is largely an act he puts on as an abrasive shield. In particular, I love the scene where Tubal is telling Shylock about how Jessica is spending the money she stole from him, and the way he wildly swings about in emotion. I imagine it as a sort of game he and Tubal play, until the mention of her trading the ring his wife had given him for a monkey, at which point the fun suddenly stops. I can see in my head Shylock's suddenly very real devastation at the loss of something that means more to him than material wealth. Honestly, the only thing that keeps me from really taking this idea to the group is that I legitimately have no idea what to do with the final Act.

there's a bit of that in their relationship before the murder, easy to exaggerate though since it hinges more on macbeth's incredible imagination outstripping his agency rather than any psychological complex imo.

After reading absalom absalom, I have a particular image of hamelt in my head. That one passage, where henry sutpan is described as hamlet stritting onstage, tossing charles bons' corpse at his sister's feet, and rejecting his role in the play, all while his sister, in her wedding dress, shows the first bit of passion in her life and rails against him. It's just such an interesting aesthetics to me, and I'm not quite sure how you would stage hamelt in a way that would get the feeling across
