There is a very good chance that i will be teaching a course on political philosophy next semester. A sudden drop out has put me in the position quite unexpectedly. I know there are anons here that are in grad school and have experience conducting and teaching seminars, so if you have any general advice that you think I should know it would be much appreciated.

Rape your wife. Is it intro. Listed specialist. Or your choice seminar. First two have locked curricula. Big deal. Final case analyse Marx and Engels statements on their desires versus their actions from a class conscious praxic position. Model this analysis. Allow analysis of the same from any rigorous position in political philosophy with a requirement of either reasoning from the texts of their ideals and letters OR first principles with reference to the contents of their texts.

>Satsuki anon works in the analytical tradition
Most depressing thing I've read all month.

Anyway, to answer your question - if you do seminars, make sure to come up with a structure that involves as many people as possible while being as retardproof as possible. My seminar leaders would always give handouts with text excerpts and pre-prepared questions in order to control the flow of the discussion and retain cohesion. This was always necessary because the classes they teach are full of mouthbreathers. The people you teach will be mouthbreathers too, so you have to be ready for it, Satsuki-anon.

Of all the areas of contemporary philosophy, political philosophy is the least 'analytic' and honestly the least 'philosophy'. It tends to be more insular than other areas, so it isn't really affected by the aspects of analytic philosophy people find so distasteful. But thanks for the advice, i already have few ideas about group discussions and activities.

If you read in other areas of contemporary philosophy you will find a lot of overlap between areas and methodologies. For example, you could be reading metaethics and run across someone like Blackburn who is trying to reduce ethics to philosophy of language, or arguments like the Frege-Geach problem. One of the landmark works in analytic metaphysics, Naming and Necessity, is as much a treatise on philosophy of language as it is on modality. And in all of these fields you will get stylistic consistency of imitating mathematical theorems and definitions, like:
>(R1) The rigid embodiment a, b, c, . . . /R exists at a time t iff R holds of a, b, c,. . . at t.
>(R2) If the rigid embodiment e = a, b, c, . . ./R exists at time t, then e is located at the point p at t iff at least one of a, b, c, . . . is located at p.
>(R3) The rigid embodiments e = a, b, c, . . . /R and a', b', c', . . . /R' are the same iff a = a', b = b', c = c', . . . and R = R'.
Which, while descriptive, often end up being tedious and ultimately unnecessary. Precision in language leads towards overwrought, overly formal writing that is only comprehensible and only of interest to other experts in the field. And this is precisely what people tend to hate about analytic philosophy: It is overly formalised, overly parochial and specific, and ultimately pointless. 'analytic philosophers are failed mathematicians' as is often said, because of the above methodological trends.
If you read analytic political philosophy you find very little of this. Rather than being influenced by other areas of contemporary philosophy, it tends to be more influenced by its historical tradition. You will find modern disciples of Machiavelli and Locke, Rousseau and Aristotle, which is almost unheard of in other areas (well, there are some neo-aristotileans and neo-thomists kicking around metaphysics, but not much else). People like to joke that analytic philosophers haven't read anyone earlier than Russell, which isn't true, but you get the sense of it by how little they talk about anyone from over a century ago. The opposite is the case in political philosophy, perhaps owing the the nature of the subject matter itself, there is still a strong tradition of exegesis and the line between the history of philosophy and philosophy is blurred. You also get the sense that political philosophers actually want their works to be read by people who aren't simply other experts in the field, so there is very little of the quasi-mathematical formalism. Any formalism come more from is sooner borrowed from economics than formal logic.

>> No.18583553

>>18583551
What i meant by political philosophy being the least 'philosophy' area is that it is almost as strongly tied with political science, sociology, and economics as it is with other areas of philosophy. If you look back at the big names, It isn't unusual to find notable political philosophers who never wrote in any other area of philosophy (Machiavelli, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Burke, Schmitt, Tocqueville, etc.), but were politicians or jurists or civil servants. You get the sense that political philosophers are the most impractical of practical men, but are not impractical men, so they are often grounded in the workings of politics and the state. Even in contemporary analytic philosophy you will find a similar situation, with figures like Dworkins and Raz who are legal scholars and Sen who is an economist. This historical grounding and distance from other areas of philosophy is why i called it insular, because you could read political philosophy without ever needing to read any other area of philosophy and lose no comprehension.
And while you could definitely level the accusation than contemporary analytic political philosophy is parochial, it is of a different kind to that of the other disciplines. The parochialism of political philosophy is not that it is hyper-specific to the point of being useless, but that it almost exclusively deals with the problems of pluralistic liberal democracy and nothing else. But political philosophy has always been focused on the problems of the time: Hobbes sought to answer the divisions of the English civil war, Machiavelli the tumult of the Italian peninsula, Burke the violence and extremism of the french revolution, so it shouldn't be surprising that contemporary political philosophy written in pluralistic liberal democracies is focused on dealing with the problems of of pluralism, liberalism, and democracy. For those who have already written liberalism off as a doomed project, none of this will be appealing, which is why i understand why some people have a distaste for it.

Don't be a coward, anon. You don't need to reveal your power level. Just don't larp as a leftoid.

International Relations and Politics degrees are where all the upper class, neoliberal banker cabal kids go, but that's only for top universities. In the lower ranked universities, Politics, International Relations and Sociology are the globalist, leftist NGO degrees where woke Twitter girls go to get ready for careers as paid activists in places like the Open Society Foundation etc. This is typically how it goes. It also depends on exactly what you teach, though. More niche subjects don't get the same attention. For example, a module on early modern history of political philosophy would draw a completely different crowd, more in line with what you are thinking. These tend to be more normal, liberal kids, who get their politics from "polite society" and approach the subject with interest and curiosity.

Top universities (like Oxford) are full of leftist twitter hos too, though.

I suppose it depends on the type of Twitter hoes. In my experience, the upper class ones are these posh, vegan, progressive types who basically take after their banker parents and want an inclusive liberal democracy or whatever. The lower class ones tend to "support sex workers", have a hammer and sickle in the bio, unironically use "you're white" as an argument, etc. etc.

You'll get nowhere in life if your first reaction in the face of anxiety or unpleasantness is to resign or back down. Have faith in yourself and your abilities, even if you have no prior experience. Because sometimes it is precisely that faith that you need.

when it comes to philosophy, you are chasing an enigma. it is eternal. and since westerners have decided that philosophy is something to blab on about, so many language semantics get baked in.
philosophical ideas become subject to their times. to the cultural ethos and background. presented through certain perspectives.
why? because philosophy is identity. you end up verbally debating identity and values, all of which are entirely based around normalization and will vary person to person, time to time, culture to culture, so on.
when it comes to philosophy, what matters is what you -can- do and what 'aspect' of reality, or whatever, you are surrendered to

discussing philosophy, especially political, in the modern university is just trickle down from whatever is either en vogue on the rise or already established

its just a game of rules (behaviors) people agree to accept to play within and the state force to back it up. from there its just boomers making deals with other boomers sprinkled in with the equally fabricated financial system and its players, and a dose of esotericism.

THAT is why i said avoid it, not because its hard, but because it is an entirely subjective thing that is so convoluted and interwoven with our existence that there is no pinpointing exactly wtf it is, and the rules, system, players, etc. can all be changed at any time.

this and just the idea of talking about politics and philosophy, people explode with their opinions that they treat as empirical truths of innate right and wrong and will spend ages hard coding them in
so much of it in the west ends up being trickle down from the abrahamics so there is almost fucking always undertones of shame and fear in any modern political expression and no inspiration

you end up devolving into these discussions about preestablished bad-guy boogie-men from which to define discussion
from there you get people projecting their own identities and why you should accept them. they are a martyr for their experience and reflect what they project.
and since many people tend to accept objective empiricism, the claim about an innate good or bad can be established, and from there, people don't have to prove themselves or be something inspiring worth following. they just have to project their internalized shame onto you and get the rest of their group to loudly ostracize you.

we dont have to inspire or compete with ideas anymore. its just shame this fear that, and this trickle-down abrahamic conditioning is pervading the entire internet into groups that generally did not operate with shame and fear, but now use it as a tool themselves because they see how weak europeans are to these abrahamic conditionings.

Give less weight to words and truth of nature becomes known
Whites losing the stage as of Now is favorable if not only for their convoluted dry verbiage and the empiricism backing It, all a result of religion.
Breadtubers arguably reflect this more than anyone as a vice for their weaknesses. It's the only sense of power they have.
Not even inspiring just defaulting to empiricism of right and wrong
