Also to add onto this, look into Nihonjinron which are texts about Japanese culture and identity. I haven't read much aside from more Otaku oriented stuff, but the subject matter is pretty wide, from the usual subjects like the nuclear bomb and the 90s economic crash, to perceptions of sexuality and the threat that globalisation represented to Japan's Far Right wing.
