18548589 No.18548589 [Reply] [Original]

Fiction is a waste of time because it will never be as efficient as non-fiction at exploring its subject matter because it has to dedicate time to telling a narrative. At best, fiction just serves as a long-form example of whatever philosphy the author wants to explore. So if you cared about the philosophy itself you would cut the out the middleman and just read the philosophy. Reading non-fiction is a much more efficient means of learning because you aren't wasting time figuring out a fictional story about the siege of troy or whalers.
Fiction books are the ultimate pseud-magnet for people who think they're too smart for other forms of trite entertainment such as film, tv, video games, etc. but are too dumb to actually read something that doesn't have a children's story attached to hold the reader's hand through complex ideas.

Fiction is far more concise and economic than whatever bloviating scholastic debate you've waded into that requires years of prerequisite reading to parse.

Stop going out in nature. Going out in nature will never be as efficient at exploring the scientific principles underlying the nature as reading textbooks would. Why appreciate the colours of flowers in bloom when you can learn about their cycles of growth, reproduction and decay in a botany textbook? Why enjoy a sun setting over a lake when you can learn about the principles of refraction and reflection, as well as the means by which the earth orbits the sun, from physics textbooks? What does walking along the beach teach you about the chemical composition of the sand between your toes? Nothing. It teaches you nothing at all.
Cut out the middle man. Stop going out in nature, and start reading more textbooks about the natural world.

If you want to hoard an enormous store of objective knowledge and facts, buy an external hard drive and download as many scientific articles onto it as you can. If you want to be a deep and well-rounded human, read fiction, poetry and philosophy. Art isn't supposed to teach you the facts. It's not supposed to be the spoonful of sugar that helps the theory go down. It's doing something different entirely. As I'm sure you, and the OP, know.
