How do I learn to play chess in my head? I can do like 4 moves before getting overwhelmed. Do I just sit in a quiet room with a blindfold on and keep practicing or is there literature that can help me?

I don't want to improve my chess. I want to improve my visualising, a chess board being my example. Will practicing chess with this book help?

This is brutal. I think he assumes that I can visualize the whole starting position. I'm having a hard time grasping a 4x4 of white and black squares without compressing it. I can tell myself that it is 4 2x2 but I cannot visualize a 5x5. I might ask at /ic/ but they're gonna tell me that i have aphantasia and should kys.

if you can't visualize a 4x4 you won't be able to play blindfold chess to any capacity. and if you want to improve visualization this is not the way to go about doing it (mainly because chess is 2D). learn about the method of loci and use that to train instead.

I don't have any problem recalling information, which that method seems to be about. I can remember digits or items just fine. My problem is moreso with clearly defined images.

As >>18521743 said, the book says that even an expert may not be able to visualize the entire board, (I hadn't read that when I claimed he assumes you can) so maybe it's not that rare only being able to do a 3x3. Still interested in improving it though.

I've been playing for quite some time I think. I have no problem remembering the starting position. My problem is with clear visualization.

the method is used for memorizing information yes, but it requires prolonged visualization to work, which is why it trains that faculty -- much more so than trying to play blindfold chess.

I am 1900+ ELO but probably couldnt play 5 moves blindfolded. I almost certainly do have aphantasia though
