The Immoralist is aimless and has no deeper meaning beyond "I should be allowed to fuck little boys."
And The Counterfeiters reads like a shitty melodrama soap opera, something that an actual good writer like Flaubert could have pulled off with ease, but he messes it up somehow.

Probably, read The Counterfeiters in Romanian (romance language) and a few other novels of his in French and really liked them. Translations can really make or break a writer, just look at how many people dislike Dostoievski because of the translations.
